SAN ANTONIO - No. 24 Trinity University Women's Tennis doubled-down on its late-night victory Friday with a strong showing against No. 21 Washington University (MO) at the Newman Tennis Center on Sunday morning.
The Tigers (11-7) seemingly had control from the first ball in the final of five consecutive nationally-ranked matchups with back-to-back doubles victories between the pairs of Megan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) and Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Colleyville Heritage) in line one (8-5) and first-year duo Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) and Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) in line two (8-3). Trinity was also just a line-three tiebreaker away from the doubles sweep.
Cushing and Hill wasted no time taking the court for their respective second- and third-line singles matchups as each Tiger raced her way to straight sets victories. Almost simultaneously, Hill and Cushing checked in with 6-2, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-4 tallies. Both Kim and Elodie Richard (Allen, Texas / Allen) had evened up their matchups after first-set stumbles soon after the third and four team points were acquired.
With four matches remaining in singles play, Jenna Lee (San Clemente, Calif. / Jserra Catholic) emerged leading her second set, holding a 7-5 victory in her first while Richard had already begun her line-six third set and Kim had just came off from her second-set equalizer. Lee finished the job, 6-2, which set up Kim for a superbreaker set and an eventual victory of her own on an 11-9 tally.
Richard grabbed the final Trinity point with back-to-back decisive sets, overcoming her slow start for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 mark.
No. 24 Trinity Women's Tennis remains idle next week, returning to action in North Texas Saturday, April 9 for a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup with Austin College, followed by a visit to No. 25 University of Texas-Dallas on April 10.
