Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO - Trinity softball split with the University of St. Thomas (Tex.) this afternoon. The number two seed in the conference is on the line as Trinity currently sits at the two spot with St. Thomas right behind them at number three. The Tigers improve to (18-17, 13-4 SCAC) after winning game one 1-0 and dropping game two by a score of 6-4.
Cat Patterson (West Columbia, Texas / Brazosport Christian) pitched a complete game shutout in game one. The senior only allowed five hits and recorded one strikeout. With the bases loaded, Jessica Lloyd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) was hit by a pitch that brought in Alexa Saucedo (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen) to plate the only run of the game.
The Tigers and Celts were tied 2-2 until UST started to pull away in the fourth inning. St. Thomas eventually took a 6-2 lead into the seventh inning. Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) blasted a solo shot in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to just three runs. Abigail Miller (Winnetka, Calif. / El Camino Real) also came in to score in the seventh but the Tigers' late rally was cut short.
Game One Rundown
Miller collected the first hit of the game in the second inning but was left stranded after hitting the leadoff double.
With runners on first and second in the top of the fifth, Delaluna made a spectacular play to turn two. Patterson then forced the next batter to fly out to left to escape the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Alexa Saucedo (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen) and Sammie Whitman (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) hit back-to-back singles. Delaluna then reached on a dropped pop fly to load the bases. With no outs, Lloyd was hit by a pitch that brought in Saucedo which ultimately led TU to the Tigers taking game one.
Game Two Rundown
St. Thomas led the game off with a solo homer. Trinity responded by adding a run in the bottom half of the first on a sacrifice fly from Miller.
In the top half of the third, UST went up 2-1 but Trinity quickly responded by adding another run. Whitman scored her second run of the afternoon on a sacrifice fly from Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Clayton Valley).
After a few pitching changes, St. Thomas took a 6-2 lead heading into the home half of the seventh inning. Delaluna smoked a ball over the left field wall to lead off the inning. Lloyd reached first after getting hit by a pitch, Madison Horn (Schertz, Texas / Clemens) then came in to pinch-run. Miller followed with a single while Williams walked to load the bases. Ultimately, the Tigers were only able to bring in one run to make the score 6-4.
Notable Numbers
Delaluna hit her sixth home run of the season in game two.
Patterson has now thrown four complete game shutouts on the season.
Lloyd is hitting .398 on the season.
Watson is batting .345 while Miller and Whitman are both above .330 on the year.
