Trinity Softball Trounces Austin College to Complete Series Sweep

SAN ANTONIO - The Trinity softball team handled the Austin College 'Roos to stretch their winning streak to seven games and improve to (17-16, 11-3 SCAC). Again, the Tigers took advantage of every AC mistake and cashed in by scoring runs to ultimately pull away. 

Sophomore Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) had a huge day at the plate, the third baseman went 4-for-6 on the day with two home runs and seven runs batted in. 

Abigail Miller (Winnetka, Calif. / El Camino Real) picked up two hits in game one while first-years Jessica Lloyd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) and Lanie Smith (Foxfield, Colo. / Regis Jesuit) collected two hits in game two. 

Pitcher Cat Patterson (West Columbia, Texas / Brazosport Christian) won her 12th game of the year after tossing five innings and only giving up one run. Emery Boettcher (Fredericksburg, Texas / Fredericksburg) picked up her fourth win of the season. In game two, the junior hurler only surrendered one run on three hits. 

Game One Rundown

First-year Alexa Saucedo (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen) walked to open up the bottom of the first. Lloyd then reached on a fielder's choice. The two then executed a double steal to put runners on second and third with no ous. Delaluna then stepped up and crushed a homer to left to put the Tigers out in front 3-1. 

Patterson then retired 11 of the 14 batters she faced to hold AC to just one run. With the senior cruising in the circle, the offense added a few more runs in the fifth inning. Senior Sammie Whitman (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) led the inning off with a bunt single then stole second base. Lloyd then singled to plate Whitman. Later on in the inning, Delaluna reached on an infield single and stole second. Sophomore Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Clayton Valley) singled to bring in another run and put the Tigers out in front 5-1 with just two innings of play left. 

Boettcher came out of the arm barn to close the door. The junior threw two hitless, scoreless innings to keep Austin College off the bases. 

Game Two Rundown

The "Roos struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Saucedo led off with a walk then quickly stole second to get into scoring position. Lloyd then singled up the middle to put runners at the corners with no outs. Delaluna then bunted for a base hit to bring in Saucedo and tie the ballgame up. 

The Trinity offense had a huge second inning that ultimately propelled them. Watson and senior Kristina Kish (Tucson, Ariz. / Canyon Del Oro) both reached on fielding errors. Senior Jenna Kash (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) also reached on an error that brought Watson in to score. Whitman followed that up with a walk. Lloyd followed with a single that plated two runners. Delaluna then blasted a ball to left field for her second home run of the afternoon. The long inning continued with a single from Smith. Watson hit again and brought in a run on a double to left-center. In her second at-bat of the inning, Kish singled to bring in another run. First-year Maliena Carelli (Kirkland, Wash. / Lake Washington) pinch-hit and singled to bring in the last Tiger run of the inning. 

Smith singled in the third and scored on a play where Kish reached on a fielder's choice. Kash later brought in a run after reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop. The Tigers ultimately run-ruled the 'Roos in five innings by a score of 12-1. 

Notable Numbers

Kaylee Ortiz (Fullerton, Calif. / Fullerton Union) pitched in the top of the fifth inning of game two. In her rookie debut, Ortiz retired all three batters she faced. 

The Tigers stole seven bases between both of today's games. 

Delaluna is the first Tiger to homer in back-to-back games this season. 

Trinity hitters also collected six extra-base hits today.

The Tigers have four home games remaining. Trinity will host the University of St. Thomas for a three-game series starting next Friday.
