KERRVILLE, Texas - No. 13 Trinity University Women's Tennis collected the 24th Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship in program history with a swift 5-0 victory over No. 16 Southwestern University Sunday afternoon.
The finale, hosted by Schreiner University at the George & Francis Cree Tennis Center, was delayed nearly 2.5 hours due to inclement conditions, which was a constant theme throughout the weekend in the Texas Hill Country.
Tiger rookie Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) finalized Trinity's (14-8) return to the SCAC throe with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in line three following a quick-work performance from sophomore Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Colleyville Heritage), 6-2, 6-0 tally in line two.
Hill and fellow Tiger rookie Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) started the doubles sweep on an 8-3 mark in line two while Cushing and senior Megan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) came in soon-after with a line-one 8-2 victory. Sophomores Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and Elodie Richard (Allen, Texas / Allen) sealed up the sweep, 8-6, from the third line.
The Tigers had two more first-set victories in hand when the rackets dropped. Flores and Richard went 6-4 and 6-3, respectively, in lines four and five while Kim was working toward a second-set equalizer in line-one play.
With the SCAC Championship in hand, No. 13 Trinity Women's Tennis will await further instruction for its berth into the 2022 NCAA III National Championship. The final site for the 2022 championship is the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, hosted May 23-29.
