IRVING, Texas - The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame recently announced their ballot for the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame. Among the finalist is former Trinity Football Head Coach Steve Mohr. The ballot includes 80 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 96 players and 33 coaches from the divisional ranks.
Leading the Tigers for 24 seasons from 1990-2013, Coach Mohr is on the ballot in the Divisional Coaches section. The announcement of the upcoming College Football Hall of Fame class will be made in early 2023 with the induction ceremony being held on December 3, 2023, at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
Coach Mohr is the winningest football coach in Trinity history. He established school records in victories with 186 and a winning percentage at .715, amassing a record of 186-74. Coach Mohr guided Trinity to the 2002 Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the NCAA Division III Championship Game.
The Tigers competed in the NCAA Playoffs on 12 occasions. In addition to the Championship Game, Trinity advanced to the NCAA Semifinals three times in 1998, 1999, and 2002. Coach Mohr also led the Tigers to 16 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships and was elected SCAC Coach of the Year 12 times during his career. He also holds SCAC records in overall wins with 186 and conference wins with 96.
Coach Mohr was elected the National Coach of the Year in 1998 by the American Football Gazette and CBS SportsLine and in 2002 by the Football Gazette. He received four consecutive American Football Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year honors from 1996 to 1999.
Twenty-five players received All-America accolades during Coach Mohr's time at the helm. Among the honorees is current Trinity head football Coach Jerheme Urban, who went on to a nine-year career in the National Football League.
Coach Mohr was honored for his service to Tiger football and the University by being inducted into the Trinity University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.
The Tigers garnered national attention in 2007, executing a 15-lateral play - "The Trinity Miracle Play" - as Trinity went on to defeat Millsaps (MS) College. Trinity won the Pontiac Game Changing Performance of the Year Award and also received $100,000 toward the general scholarship fund. The Tigers also secured an ESPY Award nomination from ESPN.
Coach Mohr lettered in baseball, basketball, football, and golf as a student-athlete at Denison (OH) University. He was honored by his alma mater in 2012 with an induction to the Varsity D Association Athletic Hall of Fame.
