LOS ANGELES – The nationally-ranked Trinity men's and women's swimming & diving teams opened up a weekend trip in Southern California by defeating Occidental College by a combined score of 208-108 in a mixed dual meet on Friday afternoon.
The 17th-ranked Tiger women won five swimming events and both diving competitions, while the 21st-ranked men's team won also swept both boards in diving and won six races in swimming. Trinity also won both mixed doubles relays on Friday.
Konstantine Partalas (San Antonio, Texas / Reagan) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, scoring 235.30 on the low board and 236.45 on the high board.
Gabi Fulk (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Horizon) took the gold for the women on the 1-meter board with a score of 220.40, while
Alexis Radhakrishnan (Lexington, Ky. / Paul Laurence Dunbar) won the 3-meter with a score of 225.55. Fulk was second to her teammate on the 3-meter board.
Garrett Guillet (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill) finished third on both boards for the Tigers, while
Alexana Heinrich (Lubbock, Texas / Lubbock) was fourth in the 1-meter competition and fifth in the 3-meter event.
Michael Kohl (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) and
Kendall Southwell (Rio Rancho, N.M. / Calvert Online Academy) swam the first two legs of the 400 mixed medley relay, while
Caroline Myers (Austin, Texas / Bowie) and
Emma Hagan (Overland Park, Kan. / Olathe East) finished things off to take the top spot with a time of 3:42.20. Trinity also took third place with a time of 3:51.90 – just over a second away from second place – with the team of
John Fontenot (Austin, Texas / St. Andrew's),
Spencer Steward (Kearney, Mo. / Kearney),
Erica Peterson (Lantana, Texas / Guyer), and
Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talent and Gifted).
The 400 mixed free relay teams also took first and third on Friday. The top team of
Nathaniel Early (Austin, Texas / Westwood),
Caleb Manifold (Helotes, Texas / Homeschool),
Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird), and Myers finished in 3:26.22. The team of
Matteo Lanzara (Moraga, Calif. / Campolindo),
Nolan Anthony (Missouri City, Texas / Missouri City),
Rachel Brown (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus), and
Kylee Hutchinson (Corpus Christi, Texas / Flour Bluff) finished in 3:30.25 to take third place.
Hagan and Kohl also won two individual events each. Hagan took the honors with a time of 1:58.80 in the 200 free, as well as winning the 50 free with a time of 24.59 seconds. Kohl won both the 50 back and the 100 IM, finishing in 23.77 seconds and 53.08 seconds, respectively.
Trinity's men swept the top three positions in the 200 free, led by
John Key (El Paso, Texas / Franklin) and his first-place swim of 1:47.83.
William Walker (Houston, Texas / Westside) was less than a second behind his teammate to take silver in 1:48.36, while
Omar Shahatit (Austin, Texas / Westlake) was third in a time of 1:50.56. The Tigers also took three of the top four spots in the women's 200 free, as Brown was second in 2:03.05 behind Hagan, while Hutchinson finished in 2:04.82 to snag fourth place.
The Tigers finished with five of the top six positions in the women's 50 back, while the men took each of the top four spots.
Julie Schwam (Portland, Ore. / David Douglas) won the women's race in 28.46, followed closely by
Bethany Mueller (Buda, Texas / Hays) in second (28.71) and Jacobson in third (27.77).
Elizabeth Molique (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Saguaro) finished fourth in 29.22 seconds, while
Juliana Wiehrdt (Waco, Texas / Midway) was sixth with a time of 29.90. Lanzara came in second behind Kohl with a runner-up time of 24.16, while Manifold was third in 24.75, and Early was fourth in 24.88 seconds.
Southwell won the 50 breast in 26.98 seconds for the Tiger men's team, which featured four of the top five performances on Friday. Anthony finished third in 27.26 seconds, while
Wesley Wasserburger (Austin, Texas / Bowie) was fourth (27.31), and Steward was fifth (27.47) in the race. On the women's side,
Josie Gillentine (Heath, Texas / Rockwall Heath) finished second by just 0.10 seconds, touching the pad in 31.44 seconds. Burns was fourth in the race in 32.06 seconds.
The 500 free was won by
William Kitto IV (Prairieville, La. / Catholic) on the men's side with a time of 5:06.72, while
Renee Trombley (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) and
Erin Morie (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu Academy) finished third and fourth for the women, clocking in with times of 5:26.21 and 5:33.65, respectively.
Myers led a charge of five women in the top six spots of the 50 fly, finishing in 26.46 seconds to take the gold medal. Molique was third in 27.92 seconds, while Brown (28.15), Peterson (28.24), and Hutchinson (28.34) were fourth, fifth, and sixth. The men's race was won by Manifold's time of 23.38 seconds, while Anthony was just behind his teammate in second with a time of 23.70 seconds.
The 50 free also featured four Tiger women in the top five, while Trinity's men finished second and third in the event. Early took silver for the men in a time of 21.92 seconds, while Lanzara finished in 21.94 for third place. Behind Hagan on the women's side were Jacobson in third (26.15), Schwam in fourth (26.18), and Wiehrdt in fifth (26.26).
Kohl was one of three Trinity men in the top four positions of the 100 IM, as Wasserburger was third in 55.72 and Southwell was fourth in 56.56. The women swept gold and silver in the 100 IM as Burns won with a time of 1:01.09 and Gillentine was the runner-up in 1:01.72.

Cathleen Pruden. "We had fun sptrinting and mixing it up with the relays. The divers did a nice job adapting to the outdoor elements. Now that we are warmed up to outdoor competition, tomorrow will be a good challenge as we'll race a full lineup."

Both Trinity teams continue the California road trip by facing off against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and California Lutheran University tomorrow in Claremont. Pomona's women are ranked ninth according to the latest College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America poll, while the men are 16th in the NCAA III rankings.
