GARLAND, Texas - The No. 20 Trinity women's swimming & diving team won its 20th consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday, completing a four-day meet that saw the Tigers dominate from the start and increase their lead every day.
Trinity has won 23 of a possible 25 SCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, scoring 1,077 points over the duration of the meet. Colorado College was second with a score of 752 points, which was just 24 points ahead of Trinity's score heading into today's competition. Southwestern finished third with 715 points, followed by University of the Ozarks and 312 points, McMurry University with 285 points in fifth, Austin College in sixth with 284 points, and Centenary College in seventh with 224 points.Â
After the morning swimming prelims that set up the finals for the last day of the meet, the diving competition wrapped up with women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter diving events.
Alexis Radhakrishnan (Lexington, Ky. Paul Laurence Dunbar) and
Gabi Fulk (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Horizon) took first and second on the low board to match their results on the high board as well. Radhakrishnan scored 433.75 points to edge Fulk's 426.40 points and outpace a total of four divers with 400+ points in the event. Both Tigers also earned NCAA "B" Cut scores, as did teammate
Alexana Heinrich (Lubbock, Texas / Lubbock) with her score of 284.65 on Saturday.
Trinity fell short of All-SCAC performances in the 1,650 free that began the final evening swimming session of the weekend, but still managed to score points as
Karin Petersen (Cibolo, Texas / Randolph) was fifth in a time of 18:32.91 that was her season-best in the event.
Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talent and Gifted) won the 200 backstroke in 2:03.55 to move into second on Trinity's all-time list.Â
Julie Schwam (Portland, Ore. / David Douglas) also finished to earn All-SCAC honors with a time of 2:06.38 that was nearly a full second faster than her previous season-best. The win gives Trinity five straight in this event at the SCAC Championships.
Trinity followed that performance by taking three of the top four spots in the 100 freestyle, led byÂ
Emma Hagan (Overland Park, Kan. / Olathe East) and her winning time of 51.89 seconds. Hagan has earned All-SCAC honors in the event for three straight years, though this is her first win in the event - and the first for a Tiger since 2018.Â
Josie Gillentine (Heath, Texas / Rockwall Heath) finished third in 53.08 seconds, followed byÂ
Juliana Wiehrdt (Waco, Texas / Midway) and her time of 53.34 that was good for fourth place.
The 200 breaststroke ended with
Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird) breaking her own Trinity record with a time of 2:17.35 that also earned her another NCAA "B" Cut time. That time is also the new SCAC Championship record and the new SCAC Open record, and it is the second straight year that a Tiger swimmer has won the event. The Tigers had four of the top eight individuals in the event and three finished in the top five.
Although Trinity didn't win the 200 butterfly,Â
Caroline Myers (Austin, Texas / Bowie) had an outstanding time that was just 0.06 seconds from breaking the school record. Myers was second ahead of teammateÂ
Erica Peterson (Lantana, Texas / Guyer) in third and both swimmers earned All-SCAC honors in the process.
The final event of the meet was the 400 free relay and the Tigers won both the championship and consolation finals. Wiehrdt,Â
Rachel Brown (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus),Â
Elizabeth Molique (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Saguaro), and Gillentine took the conolation finals by nearly 10 seconds with a time of 3:33.43. The main final featured Burns, Jacobson, Myers, and Hagan and the Trinity quartet earned an NCAA "B" Cut time of 3:28.51 to finish the meet on top.
