SAN ANTONIO – The 20th-ranked Trinity women's swimming & diving team will have six swimmers competing in the Midwest Invitational at the University of Chicago this weekend.
The Tigers just finished off their 20th consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, which led to Head Coach
Cathleen Pruden and the rest of the coaches being named the SCAC Women's Coaching Staff of the Year. Trinity won the meet by more than 300 points, with first-year
Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird) earning the SCAC Swimmer of the Meet award and sophomore
Alexis Radhakrishnan (Lexington, Ky. / Paul Laurence Dunbar) sweeping the diving events to secure the SCAC Diver of the Meet honors.
Six Trinity swimmers will compete in three relays at this weekend's meet, which begins on Friday, February 17, at 6:00 p.m. There will also be two sessions on Saturday, February 18, at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The Tiger swimmers may also compete in some individual events at the meet, though those details have not yet been finalized.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Burns,
Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talent and Gifted),
Caroline Myers (Austin, Texas / Bowie), and
Emma Hagan (Overland Park, Kan. / Olathe East) will be in action this weekend after winning the championship final at last weekend's SCAC meet. The team finished in 3:28.51 for the fourth-fastest time in school history, which currently ranks as the 15th-fastest time in NCAA III this season.
The 200 and 400 medley relays also took the top prize at the SCAC Championships last weekend and will be back in action again in Chicago. The 200 medley relay team of
Julie Schwam (Portland, Ore. / David Douglas),
Josie Gillentine (Heath, Texas / Rockwall Heath), Myers, and Hagan broke the SCAC Meet record, the SCAC Open record, and the Trinity record last weekend with a time of 1:43.96 that ranks 14th in the nation.
The 400 medley relay team is made up of Schwam, Burns, Myers, and Hagan, and will also be looking to improve on its time of 3:49.23 from last weekend. That time also broke the SCAC Championship, SCAC Open, and Trinity records to win the gold at the SCAC Meet, and is the 17th-fastest time in the country so far this year.
Looking Ahead
The Trinity divers will be up next at the NCAA Diving Regionals, hosted by Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. The two-day event begins on Friday, February 24, and will determine the divers who advance to the NCAA Championships next month.
Trinity's swimmers are also competing in order to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will be held Wednesday-Saturday, March 15-18, in Greensboro, N.C. The top 20 individuals in each event, and the top 20 times from each relay will be selected for the NCAA Meet.
