No. 16 Women’s Swim & Dive to send School-Record 10 Tigers to NCAA III Championships

SAN ANTONIO – The 16th-ranked Tiger women's swimming & diving team is sending a school-record 10 individuals to compete at the NCAA III Championships this week, which will run from Wednesday through Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.

Trinity will have individuals competing all four days of the meet, though most of the action for the Tigers will be on Wednesday and Thursday. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. (ET) each morning, followed by finals beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Tigers are competing in all five relays and nine individual events. Last season, Trinity finished 22nd overall at the NCAA III Championships.

NCAA Championships, Day One:
The meet gets started for the Tigers with the 200 individual medley on Wednesday, as first-year Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird) will compete. She qualified with a time of 2:03.23 and comes in with the 13th-fastest time in the nation. Junior Emma Hagan (Overland Park, Kan. / Olathe East) will also compete individually in the 50 freestyle and holds a top time of 23.57 seconds in the event this season. Sophomore Alexis Radhakrishnan (Lexington, Ky. / Paul Laurence Dunbar) will compete in the women's 3-meter diving event on Wednesday as well. She is the lone Trinity diver at nationals this season. The 200 medley relay finals will be the final event of the first day and Trinity will be one of 31 teams scheduled to compete in the event.  Junior Caroline Myers (Austin, Texas / Bowie) will be joined by sophomore Josie Gillentine (Heath, Texas / Rockwall Heath) and first-years Julie Schwam (Portland, Ore. / David Douglas) and Juliana Wiehrdt (Waco, Texas / Midway), with a seed time of 1:43.96 coming into the meet.

NCAA Championships, Day Two:
The second day of action will feature a Trinity competitor in four of the five swimming events. The day begins with the 200 free relay, comprised of Hagan, Myers, Wiehrdt, and first-year Rachel Brown (Flower Mound, Texas / Marcus). The quartet qualified with a time of 1:34.86 and is ranked 20th in NCAA III. Burns will then return for the 400 IM event for which she qualified with a time of 4:21.76 that is fifth in NCAA III this season. Hagan will be back in the water for Thursday's 200 freestyle race for which she swam 1:52.20 this season. The day ends in another relay – this time the 400 medley relay that features a team of Schwam, Gillentine, Myers, and Hagan that qualified with a time of 3:48.82 that ranks 19th in NCAA III.

NCAA Championships, Day Three:
Trinity will swim in three total events on Friday, with Gillentine starting things off for the Tigers in the 100 breaststroke. Gillentine posted a season-best time of 1:04.37, which is just a second from being in the top 15 in the country this year. Radhakrishnan will finish off her part in the NCAA III Championships by competing on the 1-meter board on Friday. The 800 free relay team consisting of first-years Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talent & Gifted) and Erica Peterson (Lantana, Texas / Guyer), Hagan, and Burns, is 17th nationally with its qualifying time of 7:33.15. The relay will be the final event for the Tigers on Friday.

NCAA Championships, Day Four:
Two more individual events and the final relay of the weekend will include four Tiger women's swimmers. Hagan will compete in the 100 freestyle that kicks off the final day of action at the NCAA III Championships. Hagan qualified with her time of 51.12 that places her 18th coming into the weekend. Burns will swim her final individual event as well, competing in the 200 breaststroke. Burns is 14th nationally with her time of 2:17.35 in the event. Hagan, Jacobson, Myers, and Burns will team up for the 400 free relay to close out the 2023 meet. The four Trinity swimmers posted a time of 3:28.51 to snag the 17th spot nationally.

Led by second-year Head Coach Cathleen Pruden, Trinity has broken records for the number of NCAA qualifiers each of the past two seasons. Pruden led the Tigers to their 20th consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship last month. Coach Pruden and her coaching staff were named the SCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Coaching Staff of the Year.
