No. 20 Men’s Swim & Dive Collects a Pair of Second-Day All-American Performances

Michael Kohl finished as a second-team All-American in the 100 butterfly, was third leg in second-team All-American 400 medley relay squad

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Trinity University junior Michael Kohl (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) of No. 20 Men's Swimming & Diving had a hand in two All-American performances at the 2023 NCAA III Championships Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Kohl took home the 16th spot in the 100 yard butterfly in 48.47 seconds, less than a second away from his school-record mark from the Tiger Invitational, for the first second-team performance of the night for the Tiger men.

The 400 yard medley unit of Kohl, seniors Matteo Lanzara (Moraga, Calif. / Campolindo) and Nathaniel Early (Austin, Texas / Westwood) and sophomore Kendal Southwell (Rio Rancho, N.M. / Calvert Online) finished 14th in 3:19.52 for a show of consistency as the morning's prelim netted a 3:19.56.

Lanzara's split in the event as the backstroke leg checked in at 49.67, which drove the senior up the all-time top-ten list at Trinity as he finishes second on the list.

The 200 freestyle relay of Kohl, Early, Lanzara and sophomore Caleb Manifold (Helotes, Texas) came within two tenths of a second of claiming a third second-team performance Thursday morning as the quartet finished 17th in the event's trial in 1:22.18.

Between the morning relays, Early clocked in at 1:40.70 in the 200 freestyle for 29th in the national meet.

Coach Speak
"We had some good splits across the relays the men swam today," Head Coach Cathleen Pruden said. "I'm really happy to see Matt take advantage of the opportunity to race tonight. He swam his last-ever 100 back in lifetime-best fashion and moved up to number two in Trinity history."

"Most of our men have a rest day tomorrow and we'll use it to reset and get ready for Saturday!"

He posted a time of 55.76 seconds this season and will be one of 32 individuals competing for a spot in the finals. Southwell is back for the 200 breaststroke Saturday, after posting a season-best time of 2:01.25 for the Tigers.

Kohl and Manifold open up the final day's action with the 100 freestyle event for the Tigers, marking the third individual events for both Trinity swimmers.

The 400 free relay will close out the four-day meet and Trinity qualified for nationals with the 13th-ranked time of 3:00.56. Tiger swimmers Lanzara, Early, Kohl, and Manifold will compete in the final event of the weekend.
