ABILENE, Texas – The 19th-ranked Tiger baseball team opened up the road portion of its schedule with a 9-5 loss at the hands of McMurry University on Tuesday night.
Trinity fell to 12-6 overall with the loss, while McMurry improved to 8-11 on the season with the win. The Warhawks improve to 9-2 against the Tigers at home, and Trinity has won just 10 of the 23 meetings between the schools since the 1996 season.
Despite holding a 4-3 lead early in the game, Trinity was sunk by a five-run sixth that put McMurry in front for good.
Michael Boeke (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) was charged with the loss and falls to 1-1 this season. He was one of six Trinity pitchers to appear in the game.
Harrison Durow (Dallas, Texas / Lovejoy) struck out six batters in his four innings on the hill, giving up a run on two hits and walking four batters.
Brandon Nelson (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) and
Tanner Haney (Waco, Texas / Waco) picked up two hits each to lead the Tiger offense, accounting for four of the team's seven hits.
Trinity will be back in action this weekend, traveling to Texas Lutheran University for a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series in Seguin, Texas.
The Rundown
Trinity went down in order in the top of the first and McMurry took the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Warhawks drew two walks and got a hit batter to go with a pair of hits to score the three runs.
Austin Davison (Park City, Utah / Rowland Hall) got Trinity on the board in the top of the first with his RBI single to center field.
Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) opened the inning with a walk, then moved to second on a single by Nelson
. Michael Montrezza (Los Gatos, Calif. / Leigh) loaded the bases with his single to left field, then
Jack Peterson (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to right. A throwing error brought in both Montrezza and Davison to give Trinity a 4-3 lead.
McMurry tied things up in the bottom of the second, despite not getting a hit in the inning. A leadoff walk, sacrifice bunt, and a stolen base put a runner at third with just one out, then an RBI ground out made it a 4-4 ball game.
After a loud start to the game, both teams settled in for the middle innings and the game remained tied until the sixth. In the sixth, McMurry scored five runs on four hits to take control of the game with a 9-4 lead. Trinity left multiple runners on in both the seventh and eighth innings, but failed to cut into the lead until the final inning.
An error and a walk put the first two runners on board for the Tigers in the top of the ninth, then Haney delivered an RBI single to make it a 9-5 game. The Tiger rally stopped there, though, as McMurry got the next three hitters out in order to take the win.
