Box Score 2 SEGUIN, TX - Trinity University Softball splits doubleheader with nationally ranked Texas Lutheran on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers (26-11) lost game one 0-3, but came back in game two and snagged a 5-4 victory.
Hannah Boudreaux (Pearland, Texas / Shadow Creek) led all hitters by going 5-7 (.714) at the plate while plating three and hitting a bomb.
Josephine Koelewyn (Reno, Nevada / Academy of Arts Careers and Technology) earned the win in the circle for game two as she went five shutout innings in relief.
Samantha Tagawa (Agoura Hills, California / Agoura) and
Carsyn Lee (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) also collected RBIs in the win. The Tigers move to 14-4 in SCAC play as they head into the final series of the regular season.
Game One - Tigers 0, Bulldogs 3
The Tigers got a hit early as Boudreaux beat out a chopper but that success would be short-lived as TLU turned a double play to end the innings quickly. The Bulldogs would threaten by stealing bags and getting into scoring position but the Trinity defense made plays when it mattered. Offense would stay quiet until the fourth inning when Texas Lutheran put two on the board due to good base running and some sacrifices. The Tigers had a good chance to put some offense on the board as
Marina Delaluna (Concord, California / Concord) smacked a ball to the right-center gap for a double. The Tigers were able to move her to third with less than two outs but the rest of the lineup could not drive her in. TLU tacked on another in the fifth and finished out the game winning 0-3.
Game Two - Tigers 5, Bulldogs 4
Trinity was determined to come home with a win during the series and needed run support early. Tagawa led off by legging out a bunt single to bring up the red-hot
Hannah Boudreaux. In an 0-1 count, Boudreaux smashed an up-and-out ball to right, and back it went…GONE! Trinity goes up 2-0 in the top half of the first. TLU responded with one in the bottom of the inning. The TU offense was stopped for the next two innings and Texas Lutheran exploded for three runs in the third to take the lead 4-2 through three complete.
Never backing down from a fight, the Tigers bounced back. With a runner on third, Tawaga took a two-strike pitch into the game for an RBI double to cut the lead to one. Who else but
Hannah Boudreaux blasted a ball off the wall to bring in Tawaga to interlock the game at 4? Fast forward to the fifth, Koelewyn lasered a ball through the left side for a leadoff single for Delaluna to advance her to third with a double. Lee's at bat would make every hitting coach proud as she hit a deep fly ball to right for an RBI sacrifice fly and Trinity retook the lead, 5-4.
Things got shaky in the sixth and it was time for the Tigers to rely on their defense. As there was a runner just 60 feet away, Koelewyn dug in. She made the next hitter hit a weak fly ball to right, two outs. As the next ball hit off the bat, it found the hands of
Angela Baltzell (Antioch, California / Freedom) and she fired one over to first; inning over and the Tigers retained the lead. The TU defense got two quick outs in the final half and left the game-tying run on third as Lee secured the last out of the game. Trinity wins, 5-4.
