MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Trinity's men's and women's track & field teams wrapped up the final day at the 2024 NCAA Championships with two more All-American performances.
Junior
Joy Areola (Tomball, Texas / Rosehill Christian School) and senior
Justin Johnson (Houston, Texas / Manvel) both competed in the triple jump and finished in the top 16 to earn Second Team All-American honors. Both had to overcome multiple lightning delays during the meet.
Johnson and the men's competition came up first and he reached 14.64 meters on his third jump of the day to qualify for the finals. That turned out to be his best jump of the day, though he did finish with a jump of 14.63 meters. Johnson finished ninth overall and missed out on First Team honors by just 0.11 meters.
A significant delay following the men's event forced the women's competition into the night. Areola opened with a mark of 11.78 meters that ended up as her best of three attempts, leaving her just 0.18 meters from making the finals and in 13th place.
The triple jump marked the final events of the NCAA Championships for the Tigers, which also means the end of the 2023-24 season for the Trinity men's and women's track & field teams. The teams finished with three All-America performances this weekend, as
Azariah Anderson (Saint Charles, Mo. / Francis Howell North) finished 11th in the men's 110-meter hurdles yesterday.
