No. 13 Tiger Women's Tennis Heads To West Texas To Battle Hardin-Simmons

No. 13 Tiger Women's Tennis travels to West Texas to Take on Hardin-Simmons
 
The Tigers (6-1) had a challenging weekend against top-tier competition on the East Coast, finishing 2-1 against three top-20 opponents. They bounced back from an opening loss to No. 10 Washington & Lee (3-4) with victories over No. 17 Christopher Newport (5-2) and No. 7 Johns Hopkins (4-3).
 
Last Time
 
The morning started with a tough doubles session, as the Tigers dropped the point for the first time this season. Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Arizona / Desert Mountain) and Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) fell 6-0 on line two. Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and Lauren Tin (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) were defeated 6-3 on line three. Meanwhile, Trinity Levy (Camarillo, California / Weil Tennis Academy) and Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Ponderosa) dropped a 6-3 decision on line one, giving the Blue Jays the early 1-0 lead.
 
Despite the early setback, the Tigers responded with a dominant singles performance. Hill wasted no time securing a 6-3, 6-0 win on line one to get Trinity on the board. Kim battled at line two but fell 6-1, 7-5. Hughes followed with a gritty three-set victory at line three, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Lines four and five were where the Tigers showed their heart to secure the win. Levy and Lucy Nabedrick (Plymouth, Minnesota / Wayzata) added back-to-back three-set wins at lines five and four, respectively. Nabedrick secured a 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 triumph while starting set two down 5-0.  Despite also starting her second set down 5-0, Levy prevailed 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, winning the match for Trinity in dramatic fashion. 
 
SCAC Doubles Team Of The Week - Ellie Hughes and Olivia Kim
 
For the 6th time in Hughes's career, (Doubles 2022, 2-time Doubles 2023, 2-time Doubles 2024) and the 9th time in Kim's career (Singles 2022, Singles 2023, Doubles 2022, 4-time Doubles 2023, Singles 2024, 3-time Doubles 2024), Graduate Student Ellie Hughes & Senior Olivia Kim have won SCAC Doubles Team Of The Week.

In a tough weekend against highly-ranked teams, Hughes, a graduate student from Austin, Texas, and Kim, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz., came out of the weekend with a 2-1 record. To open the Groundhog Palooza against #10 Washington & Lee, Hughes and Kim took their line two doubles match, 6-2. Then, the following day against #17 Christopher Newport, the duo took another win by the very same score. This season, Kim and Hughes are 5-1 in line two doubles play.
 
SCAC Singles Player Of The Week - Lucy Nabedrick
 
For the first time in her career, Lucy Nabedrick has been selected as the SCAC Single Players of the Week. 

From the SCAC Press Release: 
 
Against all top 20 teams, Nabedrick went 3-0 this weekend at the Groundhog Palooza. Against #10 Washington and Lee, she took line five singles, 6-3, 6-2. Against #17 Christopher Newport, Nabedrick won line four singles 6-4, 6-2. Finally, against #7 Johns Hopkins, the first-year won her line four singles match in a three-set thriller. After dropping set one and being down 5-0 in set two, Nabedrick stormed back to win set two 7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker) and dominate set three 6-1. She is now 6-0 in singles play on the season. 
 
Preview - Road Trip to Abilene 
 
The Tigers look to carry their momentum from the Groundhog Palooza to Abilene as they prepare to face Hardin-Simmons on Saturday, February 22, at 11a.m.
 
On the Hardin-Simmons Cowgirls: The Cowgirls concluded their 2024 campaign with an 8-11 record, qualifying for the American Southwest Conference tournament. However, they were unsuccessful in the first-round, where they lost to East Texas Baptist University 2-5. The Cowgirls have only played one match this 2025 season, losing 0-7 to Cal Lutheran. They will look to get their first win of the season on Friday as the Tigers come to town. 
 
The Cowgirls will look to the experienced senior Laurel Coleman to get their spring season rolling. In the fall season she recorded a 5-5 record in singles and a 1-3 record in doubles. Last time out, Trinity defeated the Cowgirls 9-0 in the 2023-2024 season. The Tiger's record against Hardin-Simmons stands at an impressive 15-0 since 2009. The Cowgirls will have their work cut out for them this weekend as the Tigers come to town.
 
Looking Ahead 
 
The Tigers will host McMurry and East Texas Baptist University next Sunday, March 2, at 10 a.m. (McMurry) and 1 p.m. (East Texas Baptist).
