Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 MARSHALL, TX - Trinity University Softball dropped their doubleheader to East Texas Baptist University on Saturday.
Â
Trinity (2-2) were defeated in game 1 by a score of 2-11, and lost in game 2 by a score of 2-7.
Josephine Koelewyn (Reno, Nevada / Academy for Arts Careers and Technology) put up a strong performance for the Tigers in the circle, only allowing 2 earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched across both games.
Leah Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas / East Central) was productive at the plate, hitting .400 (2-5) with a single, a double, and 2 RBI.
Â
Game 1: Trinity 2, ETBU 11
Â
Trinity had an early scoring opportunity in the top of the first, with
Samantha Tagawa (Agoura Hills, California / Agoura) drawing a walk and
Ella Whitacre (Roanoke, Texas / Byron Nelson) hitting a single to put runners on second and third. Unfortunately, ETBU pitching kept the rest of the Trinity bats at bay, and they came out of the frame empty-handed. The Marshall Tigers took an early lead in the bottom of the first by putting two runs across the plate. ETBU scored two more runs in the bottom of the second to put the San Antonio Tigers in a 0-4 deficit.
Â
The Maroon Tigers scratched across their first run of the game in the top of the third thanks to
Leah Gonzalez hitting an RBI single that drove in
Angela Baltzell (Antioch, California / Freedom). East Texas Baptist responded with a 7-spot in the bottom of the third to put the game out of reach for Trinity.
Leah Gonzalez got a sacrifice fly to drive in another run for the Tigers in Maroon in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough to stop the run rule from taking effect for a 2-11 Trinity loss.
Â
Game 2: Trinity 2, ETBU 7
Â
Game 2 of the doubleheader started much better for Trinity.
Ella Whitacre and
Leah Gonzalez started the game by getting on base to set up
Mariana Garcia (Goodyear, Arizona / Canyon View), who happily drove in the first runs of the game with a 2 RBI double in the top of the first. East Texas Baptist also came out firing on offense, scratching across three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. Trinity surrendered two home runs in the bottom of the second, and an RBI single in the bottom of the third to go down 2-7.
Â
Josephine Kolewyne was then summoned from the pen to prevent further damage, and she did not disappoint. She pitched 3.1 no-hit innings and collected 4 strikeouts to prevent ETBU from scoring for the rest of the game. Trinity did not find themselves with many scoring opportunities however and the game ended in a 2-7 Trinity defeat.
