No. 12 Tiger Women's Tennis Preps For NCAA Tournament

No. 12 Tiger Women's Tennis Prepares for NCAA Tournament

The 12th-ranked Trinity University Women's Tennis Team capped off a dominant weekend by sweeping Colorado College 4-0 to claim its fourth straight SCAC Tournament Championship.

Last Time

The Tigers won the SCAC title for the 27th time in the program's history and made it four tournament wins in a row. Head Coach Drew Cohn has orchestrated this remarkable streak of championship wins, having won four in five seasons as head coach. This marked the 13th straight appearance in the SCAC Championship Match for the Tigers.

The Tigers came out firing in doubles play, carrying their momentum from the previous day's performances and setting the tone for the match-up early. First to finish was the powerful duo of Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) and Trinity Levy (Camarillo, California / Weil Tennis Academy) at #1, who dispatched their opponents with an emphatic 6-0 victory. Shortly after, the relatively new pairing of Ellie Hughes (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and freshman Lauren Tin (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) secured the doubles point for Trinity with a composed 6-4 win at the #3 spot. The match at #2, featuring Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Arizona / Desert Mountain), remained unfinished with Trinity leading. Nevertheless, the Tigers had already clinched the all-important 1-0 lead heading into singles.

In a similar fashion to other SCAC matchups, the Tigers once again swept their opponents with ease in singles action. First to finish was the skillful sophomore Andrade at #6, who breezed past her opponent 6-1, 6-1, doubling the Tigers' lead. Next up was Hughes at #4, who put in another composed performance, controlling play from start to finish to win 6-2, 6-3 and push Trinity within touching distance of the championship. The final blow was delivered by the 19th-nationally ranked Ruth Hill at #1, who secured the Tigers' title by overpowering her opponent 6-3, 6-0, clinching the fourth and final point needed under the tournament's clinch format.

While the overall match was decided early, several singles matches remained unfinished but were hotly contested. Kim at #2 was locked in a three-set battle before play was called, while Lucy Nabedrick (Plymouth, Minnesota / Wayzata) at #3 and Levy at #5 were also mid-match and showing promising signs of adding to the Tigers' tally had play continued.

Preview - Time to Dance

The Tigers prepare for their first matches of the 2025 NCAA tournament as they travel to Claremont, CA to face No. 17 Whitman College on Friday, May 9. If they defeat Whitman, the Tigers will then return to action the following day to face the winner of No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer vs. East Texas Baptist/Edgewood.

On the No. 17 Whitman Blues: The Blues are 22-3 this year with the majority of their matches coming against Northwest Conference opponents. Most notably, the Blues have defeated No. 21 Gustavus Adolphus 4-3, No. 38 Pacific 7-2, 6-1, and 4-1 all on separate occasions, and No. 43 Cal Lutheran 4-3. The Blues have suffered just three defeats this season, losing to Puget Sound 3-4, Lewis-Clark State 1-6 (NAIA), and Cal Tech 2-5. Whitman will look to senior Teleya Blunt to get on the board. Blunt is 13-7 in singles and 17-3 in doubles, with her most notable singles victory coming against CalTech 6-4, 4-6, 10-6. Her defeats have come at the hands of No. 21 Gustavus Adolphus 3-6, 1-6, No. 38 Pacific 3-6, 4-6 & 0-6, 3-6 & 2-6, 3-6 all on separate occasions, and No. 43 Cal Lutheran 6-3, 5-7, 1-6. Last time out, Trinity defeated Whitman 7-2 in the 2021-2022 season. The Tigers' all-time record against the Blues is 5-2. The Tigers will hope that their great form continues as they travel to the west coast to face off against the Blues Saturday, May 10 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

On the No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens: The Sagehens are 13-7 this spring, having faced a challenging schedule. The Sagehens defeated No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4-3 & 4-0 on two separate occasions, No. 4 Middlebury 4-3, No. 12 Johns Hopkins 4-3, No. 13 Amherst 7-2. The Sagehens have suffered seven defeats this season, including University of California San Diego 0-5 (Division 1), University of Nevada 0-4 (Division 1), California State University 0-4 (Division 1), No. 2 Emory 0-4 & 3-4, and No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2-5. Pomona-Pitzer will look to senior Angie Zhou to get on the board. Zhou is 9-3 in singles and 10-5 in doubles, with her most notable singles victories coming against No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 & 6-3, 6-0 on two separate occasions, and No. 12 Johns Hopkins 6-3, 6-2. Zhou was defeated by No. 2 Emory 7-6, 2-6, 4-6, No. 13 Amherst 3-6, 2-6, and Point Loma 5-7, 0-6 (Division 2). Last time, Trinity was defeated by Pomona-Pitzer 1-5 in the 2022/2023 season. The Tigers all time record against the Sagehens is 1-10. If the Tigers are to beat Whitman in the second round of the NCAA tournament, it is likely that they face the Sagehens in the third round, with a trip to the NCAA quarterfinal on the line.

On the East Texas Baptist Tigers: The Tigers are 8-6 this spring and fresh off of an American Southwest Conference tournament championship. The ETBU Tigers notable wins came against Mary Hardin Baylor 4-3, Hardin-Simmons 4-3, and Stevens 7-0. The Tigers have suffered six defeats this season, including a 0-7 loss to Trinity earlier this season and a 1-6 defeat to Southwestern. The Tigers will look to senior Monique Ybarra to get on the board. Ybarra is 9-3 in singles and 9-5 in doubles, with her most notable singles victories coming against Southwestern 5-7, 6-3, 11-9. After losing her first three matches of the 2025 spring season to UTD 1-6, 1-6, Trinity (Ruth Hill) 1-6, 1-6, and Hardin-Simmons 2-6, 6-4, 4-6, she is on a nine-match win streak. The Trinity Tigers' all-time record against the ETBU Tigers stands at a perfect 8-0. If ETBU is to pull off two major upsets and Trinity is to defeat Whitman in the second round, then it could be a battle of the Texas Tigers for a spot in the quarterfinal of the NCAA tournament.

On the Edgewood Eagles: The Eagles are 6-8 this spring and fresh off of a Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference championship. The Eagles have most notably defeated Illinois Institute of Technology 4-0 and St. Norbert 4-1 on their way to winning their conference championship last weekend. Edgewood has suffered eight defeats this season, including a 0-7 defeat against No. 55 Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Eagles will look to senior Evelyn Taylor to get on the board. Taylor is 6-7 in singles and 7-6 in doubles, with her most notable singles victory coming against St. Norbert 6-2, 6-1 in the NACC championship match. Trinity has never faced off against Edgewood before, making this a high-stakes battle if the two meet in the third round of the NCAA tournament.

Looking Ahead

If the Tigers are to defeat Whitman and either Pomona-Pitzer, Edgewood, or East Texas Baptist in the following round, they will play their quarterfinal match on Tuesday, May 20.
