ABILENE, Texas – The 11th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team continued its unstoppable run at this weekend's ITA Southwest Regional Championships by powering past the opposition on Saturday, setting up an All-Trinity final to guarantee that the Tigers will represent the region at the ITA Cup.
The Tigers had five of the eight quarterfinal spots in singles and four of the eight spots in the doubles quarterfinals. Trinity won all four doubles matches to set up an all-Trinity semifinal between the top two seeds coming into the weekend. In singles, the only match Trinity lost was the one that featured two Tigers playing each other, resulting in an all-Trinity semifinals round in singles as well.
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) was the top seed in singles and won her Quarterfinal match against Emma Nordin of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX) 6-2, 6-3 to reach the final four. In the Semifinals round, she faced off against #3 seed
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Carroll). Andrade set up the showdown with her teammate by winning 6-1, 6-1 over East Texas Baptist University's (TX) Monique Ybarra in the Quarterfinals. Andrade upset her top-ranked teammate 6-0, 6-0 in the Semifinals to make it to Sunday's Championship match.
The other side of the bracket featured three Tiger players, with the only negative mark being that two teammates faced off in the Quarterfinals. Fourth seed
Lucy Nabedrick (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) took on #6 seed
Lauren Tin (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) in one of those matches, while
Eva Kovachev (Arlington, Texas / The Oakridge School) took on Lucia Rodriguez from the University of St. Thomas (TX). Nabedrick earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Tin, meaning Trinity's only defeat of the day came at the hands of another Trinity player. Kovachev won 6-1, 6-4 to complete that part of the bracket and set up another Tiger vs. Tiger Semifinal. Nabedrick prevailed 6-4, 6-2 to finish off her day and set up another showdown between teammates for the Regional title.
In doubles, Trinity made up half the field for the Quarterfinals and by the end of the round, all four Tiger teams were still standing to guarantee Trinity would bring home the doubles crown as well. The only question was which teams would emerge on Saturday. The #1 seeds Levy and Andrade took out Rodriguez and Mariel Herrera from St. Thomas 8-0 in the Quarterfinals, then #2 seeds Kovachev and Nabedrick also won 8-6 against Lori Bryan and Avery Williams from hosting Hardin-Simmons University (TX). The #3 seeds Tin and
Katie Schmidt (Prairie Village, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) took out Addyson Tylaska and Taylor Levy from HSU with an 8-1 decision, then unseeded
Astrid Kerrman (Edina, Minn. / Edina) and
Allison Vo (Sugar Land, Texas / Elkins) prevailed with an 8-5 win over HSU's Sydney Tomlin and Brenna Gordon. By the end of the day, the top doubles seeds held and made it to Sunday's final. Levy and Andrade beat Vo and Kerrman 8-2, while Kovachev and Nabedrick were 8-4 winners over Tin and Schmidt.
