SAN ANTONIO – The final day of the ITA Regional Championships will feature all-Trinity finals in both singles and doubles, as the Tigers continued a successful weekend of play.
Trinity had seven of the eight singles quarterfinalists and two of the four doubles semifinalists to start the day, then promptly dispatched the other schools to ensure that a Tiger singles and player and a Tiger doubles team will win the titles and advance to the ITA Cup next month in Rome, Ga.
#1 seed
Eva Kovachev (Arlington, Texas / The Oakridge School) defeated teammate
Kritika Voruganti (Frisco, Texas / Centennial) 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to start her day.
Lauren Tin (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) also notched a 6-2, 7-5 win over Hardin-Simmons University's (TX) Gema Perales – the only non-Trinity singles competitor remaining in the main draw. That set up a Semifinal showdown between Kovachev and Tin this afternoon. Kovachev won the first 6-4, but Tin rallied late to take a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker win in the second set. In the end, Kovachev came out victorious with a 6-0 win in the third set and will have a chance to win the ITA Regional Singles title tomorrow.
The other half of the bracket featured four Tiger competitors and included #2 seed
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Ponderosa). Andrade took out teammate
Katie Schmidt (Prairie Village, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) 6-1, 6-2 in their Quarterfinal matchup, while
Astrid Kerrman (Edina, Minn. / Edina) won over fellow Tiger
Katie Hoang (San Gabriel, Calif. / San Marino) by a score of 6-0, 7-5. Andrade then set up the #1 versus #2 battle with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kerrman in the Semifinals.
Trinity also had the two top-seeded doubles teams still in action, but both would face outside competition in today's Semifinals. The #1 seed team of Kovachev and Andrade defeated Hannah Lightner and Julia Lightner of Howard Payne University (TX) 8-2 to reach the finals, while #2 seeds Schmidt and Tin won 8-1 over Jolin Ha and Bailee Lane of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX). That sets up another all-Trinity final and another #1 versus #2 matchup in tomorrow's doubles championship.
