Box Score San Antonio - Trinity first-year goalkeeper
Matt Cardone was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Men's Soccer Newcomer of the Year, heading a list of eight Tiger
honorees.
Cardone (San Antonio/MacArthur) finished third in the conference
in goals-against average (0.68), as well as goals allowed (six). He
sported a personal mark of nine wins and two losses as a starting
keeper, and had three shutouts during the 2011 season.
He also registered 24 saves, for a save percentage of .800.
Cardone represented the second consecutive Newcomer of the Year
selection for Trinity, following teammate Yuri Ribeiro's
recognition in 2010.
Joining Cardone on the All-SCAC First Team were two defenders,
senior CH Farmer (Dallas/Lake Highlands), and junior Denny Mask
(Tulsa, Okla./Holland Hall). Trinity allowed only 13 goals in 18
games during the season, for an average of .72 per match-up.
Offensively, Trinity scored 57 goals, with 3.17 per game. Senior
forward Josh Adams (Houston/Clear Brook), and senior midfielder
Zach Garcia (Dallas/Lake Highlands) also were First Team honorees.
Adams led the Tigers with 15 goals (six game-winners), and had
three
assists, for 33 points. Garcia scored six goals, and five of them
were game-winning scores.
Sophomore forward Brian Hines (Tempe, Ariz./Brophy College
Prep), was elected to the All-SCAC Second Team. Hines produced 10
goals (two game-winners) and two assists, for 34 points. Junior
defender Kyle Porter ( Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado) also made the
conference Second Team, and junior midfielder Aaron Olson (St.
Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) earned a spot on the Third Team.
Trinity was upset 2-0 last weekend in an NCAA Division III
second-round home game by Texas-Tyler. The Tigers completed their
campaign with a 14-2-2 record.
The head coach of the Tigers is Paul McGinlay, and the assistant
is Kelly Altman.
