San Antonio - Trinity had three women's
tennis players earn All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference
honors, highlighted by first-year Mackenzie Knoop being named the
SCAC Player of the Year.
Knoop was joined on the 2012 All-SCAC team by junior Thavindra
Ekanayake and sophomore Kylie Hornbeck. Ekanayake also earned
All-SCAC honors last season, as well as being named Honorable
Mention All-SCAC in 2010. All three players were also chosen
for the SCAC All-Tournament Team this season.
The All-SCAC voting is conducted by the head coaches in the
conference, and Trinity was the only school with three
honorees. The Tigers recently won the SCAC Championship for
the first time since 2006, defeating Sewanee 6-3 in the
final. Trinity will play in the NCAA Playoffs, starting this
weekend.
Knoop posted a 15-6 singles record this season, and is ranked
third in the region in singles. Along with Ekanayake, Knoop
also has a record of 14-8 in doubles this season, and the duo are
ranked fifth regionally. She is Trinity's first Player
of the Year honoree since Lizzie Yasser won the award in
2002.
Last fall, Knoop won the ITA Singles and Doubles Regional
Championships, finishing sixth nationally in the ITA Small College
National Championships in singles.
Ekanayake and Hornbeck sport identical 18-6 singles records, and
the pair lead the team in singles victories for the season.
Ekanayake is 16-8 overall in doubles (most of that with Knoop),
while Hornbeck holds a 13-11 record in doubles this year.
Trinity is led by Head Coach Russell McMindes and Assistant
Coach Jacob McMindes. Coach Russell McMindes is in his first
season coaching the Tiger women, and has also been the head coach
for the Trinity men's team for the past three years. In
SCAC men's tennis voting, he was named the SCAC Coach of the
Year for the third consecutive season.
