San Antonio - Trinity University's
women's soccer team entered the 2013 NCAA Division III National
Championship match undefeated on their season at 25-0-2. Their
opponents, William Smith College, had not lost since their season
opener and had not yielded a goal in 15 matches. The two sides met
at San Antonio's Toyota Field to play for the hardware.
Trinity had the
majority of the 1,202 fans in the support section, but William
Smith was able to manage the crowd with a quick Madeline Buckley
goal in the 11th minute.
The Tigers, who've
trailed multiple times in their playoff run, continued to apply
pressure and pelted Heron goalkeeper Chelsea Dunay with shots.
Trinity let go a total of 24 shots in the game - including nine on
target - but Dunay came up big to earn her clean sheet, especially
before the half when the Tigers had several
opportunities.
Shortly into the
second half, Trinity conceded a second goal, to Krista Longo,
ultimately falling 2-0 to the Herons.
For Trinity, Kelsey Falcone had
six shots, three on-goal. Senior Captain Jennifer White came
close on one of her three shots, as did Yasmeen Farra. Shelby
Guenthardt, a senior who will graduate tied for second all-time
in the program's history with 52 goals, had three strikes as well.
Both of Kirby
Peddicord's shots were saved, including a free kick that was
deflected right in front of the goal. Emily Jorgens, who
tied the NCAA record with her 30th assist of the year yesterday,
also attempted a pair of shots.
William Smith
attempted 12 total shots, and Trinity goalkeeper Devan Osegueda saved
four of the six shots that were on frame.
Trinity's season ends
at 25-1-2, which establishes a new record for wins in a single
season for the women's soccer program.
