Trinity has Successful Showing at Home Opener

Box Score

The Tigers opened the 2013 outdoor season at home today with the Trinity Open. The meet saw a number of impressive early marks, as well as multiple Tiger wins in both track and field events.

Highlighting the meet on the women's side was the 4x100 meter relay team (Mary Kate Stewart, Salome Wilfred, Tolley St. Clair, and Bailey Drury). Their impressive time of 49.30, for second place, was just .08 seconds off the school record.

Not to be outdone by the short sprints, the 4x400 meter relay team (Bailey Drury, Salome Wilfred, Jessie Dean, and Mariana Sigala) ran one of the fastest times (4:03.06) that Trinity has seen in years. Their performance puts them fifth all-time in the record books.

First year Bailey Drury also finished third in the 400m open with a 59.97 to land her eighth all-time for Trinity. Junior Jessie Dean won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:07.73.

On the distance side, junior Jackie Newell won the 3,000m steeplechase with a wire to wire performance that moves her to up to 3rd in the Trinity record books. Her time of 11:35.23 was a 29 second personal best.

Senior Elana Edwards won the high jump with a 1.62 meter jump. Her mark was .01 meters shy of her personal best. Edwards then went on to finish third in the triple jump. Her mark of 10.73 meters places her sixth all-time in that event.

Before her 4x400 duties, first year Mariana Sigala notched an impressive 2:19.44 in the 800m, which puts her fourth all-time. She was followed by teammate Vanessa Moreno, who finished close behind in 2:21.41, putting her sixth all-time. Sophomore Michelle Oberndorf finished third overall in the 1500m with a 4:57.54, good enough to put her tenth in the all-time records.

On the men's side, senior Justin Campbell took first in the discus with an impressive throw of 48.50 meters, just two meters shy of his personal record. Senior Sal Perdomo also took the win in the 1500 with a time of 4:06.10. Sophomore Brandon Douglas finished second overall in the 5,000m race with a personal best time of 16:47.72.

The men's 4x400 meter relay team (Austin Agrella, Mike McIntosh, George Warren, Ian Plantz) put in a good showing for the final running event of the meet. Their time of 3:27.53 put them in second place overall, and just a second shy of their 2012 season best.

Next up for the Tigers is the Incarnate Word Invite just six days from now. The two-day meet will start on Friday, March 1st, with the majority of events to follow on Saturday, March 2nd.
