Trinity Men Win SCAC Track & Field Championship; Women Second

San Antonio - The Trinity Tigers men's track and field team won its second consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship, and the Tiger women placed second at the two-day meet.

Trinity's men won the top spot with 289 points, outdistancing Southwestern University's 156. The University of Dallas scored 79 points, while Colorado College posted 60. It marked the ninth SCAC Track and Field Championship for the Tigers, who won 13 titles in the course of the weekend.

The Tiger women, who were also defending conference champions, were runners-up to Texas Lutheran University by just 26 points. TLU scored 263 points in its first-year in the SCAC, while Trinity recorded 237.  Southwestern had 47 points, Colorado College scored 37, and Dallas accounted for 31. Trinity won a total of eight championships during the meet.

Trinity first-year student-athlete Stephen Mason tied for SCAC Male Athlete of the Meet honors with Joseph Quintero of Southwestern. The two standouts chalked up 28 points each.

On Saturday, Mason won the men's discus with a mark of 35.88 meters, and placed fourth in the javelin, with a throw of 37.72 meters. Earlier in the meet, Mason was runner-up in the shot put (11.53 meters), and placed third in the hammer throw (31.94 meters).

Senior George Warren repeated as men's high jump champion (1.82 meters), and also captured the long jump (6.61 meters). Warren was also a member of the champion 4x400-meter relay team (3:26.80). Joining Warren on the team were senior Will Paulus, and juniors Mike McIntosh and Ian Plantz. Paulus captured the 400 meters (49.08 seconds), and McIntosh was runner-up (49.87).

McIntosh, juniors Cody Wolfe and Darian Sommers, along with first-year Adam Saunders won the 4x100-meter relay (42.89 seconds). Wolf was the 100-meters champion (11.03 seconds), Saunders placed second (11.05), and Sommers was third (11.14). Paulus brought home the medal for the 200 meters (22.06 seconds), Wolfe placed second (22.47), and McIntosh was third (22.50).

Junior Ian Plantz took the 800 meters event (1:58.19), and sophomore Kirk Gulliver held the No. 2 position (1:59.12). Sophomore Chris Soto won the 1,500 meters (4:10.12), and sophomore Taylor Piske was the first-place finisher in the 5,000 meters (15:50.08).

Seniors Vanessa Moreno and Kelsey Oelze tied for second place in the competition for Female Athlete of the Meet, with 28 points each. Moreno won the 5,000 meters (18:41.24) on Saturday, and senior Maddie Murphy was runner-up (18:42.76). Moreno was the second-place finisher in in the 1,500 meters (4:56.19). On Friday, Moreno won the 10,000 meters race (39:25.48). Oelze repeated as javelin champion (36.31 meters), was runner-up in the shot put (11.63 meters), placed third in the discus (33.35 meters), and came in at No. 4 in the hammer throw (31.93 meters).

Sophomore Mariana Sigala ran the 800 meters in 2:19.53 for a first-place position for the second year in a row. Senior Jessie Dean won the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.24). Dean, Sigala, sophomore Bailey Drury, and senior Salome Wilfred were the winning unit of the 4x400-meter relay (4:02.16). The 100-meter hurdles went to first-year Abigail Sheppard (16.51 seconds).

Members of the Tiger teams will compete May 2 at the Roadrunners Invitational in San Antonio.
