#10 Men's Soccer Scores Double-Overtime Goal to Beat Colorado College

Box Score

San Antonio - The 10th-ranked Trinity men's soccer team wrapped up its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend with a thrilling 1-0 double-overtime victory over No. 18 Colorado College Sunday afternoon.

First-year Tiger Austin Michaelis scored the first goal of his collegiate career, with just under five minutes remaining in the second overtime period. Brent Mandelkorn slipped past the defense down the left side, then sent a low pass into the six-yard box.  Derrick Horvath got a touch on it, and then Michaelis was there for the game-winner, driving it into the lower right corner past the diving goalkeeper.

"Quite simply, both teams could have won the game," reflected Head Coach Paul McGinlay. "Both teams could have also lost the game. An obvious statement, but the margin of error for victory and defeat was just so small. These Sunday afternoon games in 90 degrees in October, when there is so much on the line, is difficult for both teams. It just took one incident on the left side, and Austin Michaelis was there to pick up his first goal for Trinity. It was a meaningful one, and hopefully, there will be more in the future.

Trinity now stands 11-2-0 (7-2-0 SCAC), while Colorado suffers its first conference loss of the season, dropping to 9-2-2 (7-1-1).  Colorado still holds a slim lead over Trinity in the SCAC standings.  The Tigers won their sixth consecutive game - all of which have been shutouts.

One of the key reasons for the clean-sheet game was goalkeeper Chad Margotta, who accounted for eight saves in the contest - including two critical stops in the first OT period. Margotta now has 52 saves to his credit this year.

"The thing that kept us alive was the fact that we kept them off the board," continued Coach McGinlay. "They scored three goals against us last time. The team has been able to do a little bit more, defensively. I think that's our 10th shutout in 13 games. When you have 10 shutouts, you are going to keep yourself in most games. I was really pleased with the defensive effort."

Trinity continues its SCAC schedule next weekend, starting Friday at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Tigers then head to Sherman, Texas, Sunday, for a game with Austin College.
