Tiger Volleyball Splits Matches Saturday at National Invitational

 San Antonio - The 16th-ranked Tigers volleyball team split its final-day matches Saturday at the Trinity National Invitational, losing to the University of Massachusetts-Boston, and beating the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX).

MATCH SUMMARIES

In the second match-up of the day, Trinity defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor 25-14, 20-25, 25-13, 25-17.

The Tigers jumped out to a 20-14 lead over the Crusaders in the first set, and won the next five points to take a 1-0 advantage. Trinity hit .316 in the initial stanza.

The second set turned into a see-saw affair, and Trinity found themselves down 17-18. The Cru won three consecutive points, but the Tigers were able to rally back to put the score at 20-21. Mary Hardin-Baylor then won the last four points to even the sets count at one all.

In set three, the Tigers ended up hitting .333, and it showed in the course of the set. Trinity led 21-13, and captured four points in a row to claim a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was tied at 12-12, when the Tigers went on a three-point run. Trinity led 23-15, and won two of four points to capture the match.

Earlier in the day, UMass-Boston rallied to beat Trinity 17-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-22.

After holding a slim 18-17 lead, the Tigers won seven consecutive points to take the first set of the match.

The second set a different story, as the Tigers fell behind 14-21. Trinity could not manage to overcome the deficit, and the Beacons were able to even the set count to 1-1.

The Tigers found themselves in a similar bind in the third set as they were down 15-22. Trinity took a point, but eventually lost the set.

The fourth set was a tight match-up, with both teams battling. The score was tied at 17-17, when Trinity took a 19-17 lead. After a 20-20 tie, the Beacons won three straight points. The Tigers closed to 22-24, but UMass finished off the match.

NOTABLES

Trinity finished the event in second place, behind UMass-Boston, with a 3-1 mark over two days. The Tigers are now sporting a 25-7 overall record, as Trinity completed its regular-season home schedule.

Erika Edrington and Madeline McKay were selected for the All-Tournament Team.

Edrington, the Tigers' lone senior, was honored prior to the match with Mary Hardin-Baylor. She accounted for 46 assists against Mary Hardin-Baylor, and 21 in the match with UMass-Boston. Edrington posted 156 assists in the tournament, and has 1,053 this season. She has amassed over 4,100 assists in her career, and stands fourth on the Tigers' all-time list.

McKay tied for the Tigers' lead in kills against Mary Hardin-Baylor, with 17 in her column, while hitting .300. She led the Tigers with 11 kills against UMass-Boston. McKay posted 56 kills and 12 aces in the four matches, with five coming against Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Kirby Smith had a double-double of 17 kills and 14 digs against Mary Hardin-Baylor. Sarah Mullens tied her teammate for the lead in digs against Mary Hardin-Baylor, and paced the Tigers with 12 against UMass-Boston. Maggi Linker led the Mary Hardin-Baylor match with six blocks.

UP NEXT

The top-seeded Tigers head to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament November 4-5 at Shreveport, Louisiana. Trinity (13-1 SCAC) will play the winner of the University of Dallas (TX) and Austin (TX) College in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Friday.
