Box Score Blanco, Texas - After a rough weather day to open the tournament on Monday, the Tiger women's golf team pulled away in the end to secure the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Tuesday.
"They all played great," said Head Coach Carla Spenkoch. "It was tight for a while, and they pulled it out. I don't know if it was just playing the course a second time, but they just played better. They worked well as a team, and got it all together as a team. It was a good team effort. Individually, we had a good year. They played well all year, and it was a good year for everyone."
The Tigers shot a final-round 321 at the Vaaler Creek Golf Club, and won the coveted title by six strokes over Schreiner (TX) University. Trinity had to finish the first round on Tuesday due to weather and lightning delays on Monday, recording 319, for a 640 two-day total. Southwestern (TX) University placed third, Centenary (LA) College was fourth, and Texas Lutheran University came in at fifth.
Coach Spenkoch previously led Trinity to the title in 2014. Trinity also won the inaugural women's championship in 1995, prior to Coach Spenkoch's arrival in 1997. The Tigers were runners-up on five occasions on Coach Spenckoch's watch, including last year's event held at Vaaler Creek.
Individually, all five Trinity golfers earned All-SCAC accolades. Christine Campbell was an All-SCAC First Team recipient, with a team-best 4-over-par 76 in Tuesday's second round. Campbell finished in fourth place, with a 13-over 157. She finished four strokes behind the medalist, Kaycee Bankert of Schreiner, and just one stroke in back of Jessica Varner of Centenary, and Bernice Leonard of Southwestern, who tied for second.
Getting All-SCAC Second Team honors were Shelby DeVore, Hanna Niner, and Brigette Lee. Taylor Moser earned All-SCAC Honorable Mention. DeVore finished in sixth place after carding a 10-over 82, for a 160 total. Niner and Lee each shot 10 over par, tying for seventh place at 162. Moser posted a 9-over 81, for a 165, and completed the tournament in 13th place.
