Fourth-Ranked Tigers Defeat Rochester in Series Opener

Box Score

San Antonio - The fourth-ranked Trinity baseball team opened a three-game series with Friday night's 9-2 victory over the University of Rochester (NY).

GAME SUMMARY

Trinity grabbed the early lead with a pair of two-out singles in the second inning, including a run-scoring hit by Jack Wisniewski that put the Tigers on top 1-0.

Rochester answered in the fourth with a two-out rally of its own, putting together a triple and a Trinity fielding error to tie the game 1-1. The Yellowjackets then started the following inning with two hits, which led to the visitors taking a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.

That lead was short-live as the Tigers loaded the bases with two hits and a walk to start the inning, then tied the game on Jake Martin's sacrifice fly to right field. Rafe Chaumette put Trinity in front for good with a run-scoring infield single, while a Rochester throwing error made it a three-run inning that put Trinity in front 4-2 after five complete.

After getting that lead, Tiger starter Mark Tindall shut down the visiting bats, allowing just one baserunner over the final four innings and retiring 10 straight batters to end the game.

Trinity's offense added two more insurance runs after the seventh-inning stretch, keyed by a leadoff triple from Dalys Binder. The eighth saw three more Tiger runners cross the plate to put the game out of reach. Binder drove in a pair of runners with another triple in the inning.

NOTABLES

Trinity improved to 9-3 while Rochester dropped to 1-3.

Mark Tindall (2-0) hurled the first complete game of the season for a Tiger pitcher, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits and striking out seven batters. He now leads Trinity's pitching staff with 26 strikeouts this season.

Dalys Binder came off the bench and reached base in all three plate appearances, going 2-2 with two RBI and three runs scored. He tied a school record by becoming the seventh player in school history to hit two triples in a single game. The last Trinity player to equal the record was Pat Hirschberg in 2014.

Logan Morrison and Rafe Chaumette had three hits each in the game, while Michael Goodrich and Jack Wisniewski also had two hits each for Trinity.

Jake Martin went 2-4 with his team-leading fifth double of the year, picking up two RBI and a run scored in the game.

The Tigers collected a season-high 16 hits in the victory, with eight different players reaching base safely.
