Box Score 3 Georgetown, Texas - Five Trinity men's singles players and a doubles team advanced at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southwest Region Championships on Friday.
HIGHLIGHTS
Jordan Pitts, Hao Nguyen, Cameron Krimbill, Brett Finan, and Wilson Hamilton advanced to the A Singles round of 16, while Pitts and Krimbill earned a slot in the A Doubles semifinals.
The top-seeded Pitts defeated Dominic Denardo of Howard Payne (TX) University 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round, and then beat Julian Lee of LeTourneau (TX) University 6-1, 6-3. Pitts faces Hayden Steffes of the University of Texas at Dallas in Saturday's third round.
Nguyen, a #9 seed, beat Evan Pena of Concordia (TX) University 6-0, 6-1, and then advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Max Pearson of Southwestern. Next up for Nguyen is fourth-seeded Angelo Yasuro Ito Tost of the University of the Ozarks (AR).
Brett Finan outfought ninth-seeded Giovanni Zamboni of the University of Texas at Dallas 4-6, 6-1, 10-8, and then beat Steven Tibbets of Southwestern 6-4, 7-6.
Finan will take on fifth-seeded teammate Cameron Krimbill in the next round. Krimbill opened the singles tournament with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over LeTourneau's Christian Ferris, and then beat Juanrodrigo Lopez of the University of St. Thomas (TX) 6-2, 6-1. .
Ninth-seeded Hamilton took out TJ Saniseng of Ozarks 6-2, 6-0, and then beat Vesko Lekovic of Southwestern 2-6, 6-1, 10-8. Next on the draw for Hamilton is Ritvik Ganesan of UT-Dallas.
The top-seeded doubles tandem of Pitts and Krimbill were 8-5 winners over Siddarth Kortikere and PJ Cabato of Austin (TX) College in the round of 16, and then beat Tibbets and Alexis Dimanche of Southwestern 8-4, in the quarterfinals. A semifinals matchup is set with Southwestern's Hunter Bajoit and Hemanshu Rambojun. Pitts won the 2018 doubles title with former Tiger player Wilson Lambeth.
Cal Hunter defeated Ashwin Vaithianathan of UT-Dallas 7-6 (5), 6-1 in the first round of singles. Hunter then lost to Yasuro Ito Tost 3-6, 1-6.
Artur Zigman won 6-3, 6-4 over Joseph Salinas of East Texas Baptist University, and then fell 4-6, 3-6 to fifth-seeded Carlos Martinez of McMurry (TX) University.
Lars Wiik outbattled Michael Davis of Concordia 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-8 in the opener, and then lost 7-6 (4), 0-6, 3-10 to ninth-seeded John Herr of East Texas Baptist.
Christian Settles lost to Esteban Arredondo-Huergo of Concordia 6-0, 6-7, 6-10 in the first round, and is now competing in the A Singles Consolation draw.
The second-seeded doubles team of Hamilton and Zigman blanked Arredondo and Adrian Mungia of Concordia 8-0 in the second round, and then lost 6-8 to the fifth-seeded duo of Martinez and Chase Daniell of McMurry in the quarterfinals.
The A Singles and Doubles champions advanced to the ITA Cup, to be held October 17-20 at Rome, Georgia.
