No. 8 Women's Soccer Upset by Southwestern on the Road

Box Score

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Two of the top teams in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference faced off this afternoon. Unfortunately, the Tigers were upset by Southwestern in a tale of two halves.

Trinity dominated the first half by shooting 10 shots on goal but only scored one goal which would come back to haunt the Tigers later on. In the second half, SU flipped a switch and became the aggressor which resulted in the Pirates scoring two unanswered goals.

Trinity falls to (9-1-1, 3-1-0 SCAC) on the season after today's loss. The Tigers streak of 136 straight regular season SCAC wins also comes to an end today. The last current conference school to beat Trinity was Southwestern by a score of 2-1 on Nov. 1, 2008. Southwestern improves to (9-1-0, 1-0-0 SCAC) after today's win.

The Rundown

The Tigers quickly set the pace for Sunday's game as they went on multiple runs throughout the first half. Trinity's offense took six corners and managed to put up 23 shots in the first half. 23 of those shots were on target with one of them being a TU goal.  Junior forward Molly Sheridan (St. Louis, Mo. / Kirkwood) found the back of the net in the ninth minute of the match to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. The Trinity backline only allowed one shot during the first half.

Early in the second half, Southwestern drew a foul just outside of the penalty box. One of SU's defenders stepped up and nailed a free kick for the equalizing goal in the 51st minute of the match. Shortly after the equalizer, the Pirates went on a run and got a friendly bounce on a shot that found the back of the net which gave Southwestern their first lead of the day. After conceding the goal in the 55th minute of the match, SU took that momentum and made a few more runs at the goal where goalkeeper Joey Finley (Albuquerque, N.M. / Early College Academy) had to make a few big saves.

In the 72nd minute, Madison Horner (Austin, Texas / Bowie) found herself in a one-on-one opportunity with the SU goalkeeper but the keeper from SU stepped up to make an incredible save. The Tigers were unable to cash in on their remaining opportunities.

Coach Speak

"It's a game of opportunities and executing those chances early when you can," began Assistant Coach Spencer Valdespino. "Our hunger had us knocking on the door but unfortunately it was after closing time. We're starved now but a good week of getting after it should have us full again next weekend."

Up Next

The Tigers have three SCAC games left before their final match of the regular season against UTSA. Next weekend, Trinity will host Austin College and the University of Dallas.
