Box Score SAN ANTONIO – The 21st-ranked Tiger women's soccer team finished off a weekend of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action at home with a 1-0 shutout victory over the University of Dallas on Sunday afternoon.
Despite a lopsided 27-3 advantage in shots taken, Trinity was unable to find the back of the net until the 80th minute of action when sophomore Ashlyn Zingelmann (San Antonio, Texas / Brandeis) scored from point-blank range for her second game-winning goal of the season. Sophomore Joey Finley (Albuquerque, N.M. / Early College Academy) recorded her second clean sheet of the season after minding the net for all 90 minutes of today's game.
The Rundown
Trinity opened the game with a flurry, notching a pair of shots in the first 30 seconds of action. The Tigers finished the opening period with 12 shots total, allowing only one to the visiting Crusaders.
Zingelmann picked up the first on-target attempt in the eighth minute, while Camryn Beall (Morrison, Colo. / Colorado Academy) clanged her shot off the cross bar in the 10th minute to keep it scoreless.
The Tigers came out after halftime with a pair of on-target shots in the first 10 minutes, but the game remained in a scoreless tie. Dallas had four saves in each half of play, but as the clock neared 10 minutes to play, Trinity finally broke through on a set piece.
The scoring sequence actually started with a Dallas counterattack that was shut down by the Trinity back line combination of Zingelmann and Reese Wallace (Oak Park, Calif. / Oak Park). The Tigers got a free kick short of midfield following a Dallas foul, then played the ball up the left side of the field hoping for a scoring chance.
Abby Schneider (Albuquerque, N.M. / Bosque School) and Kaity Ward (Phoenix, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep) combined to reach the box, but Schneider's cross intended for the front of the goal was blocked by a Dallas defender to set up a Trinity corner kick. Michaela Bosco (Weatherford, Texas / Weatherford) came over for the corner, while Ward came over unmarked in the corner of the box. Bosco played it short to Ward, who turned and fired to the far post. Zingelman was there to knock it in for the winner, with both Bosco and Ward picking up assists.
Trinity had several more shots in the final 10 minutes, but the Zingelmann goal proved to be the difference. Dallas had its final shot from more than 20 yards out following the Tiger goal, but the attempt never really had a chance to tie the game.
Numbers to Note
Ward notched her 10th assist of the season to increase her team lead. She is pacing the Tiger offense with 10 goals, 10 assists, and 30 total points in 13 games played.
Bosco has now scored five goals and recorded six assists in her rookie season, and she is third on the team with 15 points.
Both of Zingelmann's goals this season have been game-winners, but her first score this season came on a penalty kick.
