Box Score SAN ANTONIO - The Trinity University Men's Soccer team hosted Hardin-Simmons University in a hard fought match. The game-winning goal off the foot of Michael Somerville (Ft. Worth, TX / Arlington Heights) proved to be the difference in the match. The last time these two teams faced each other, HSU stunned the Tigers with a 2-1 victory.
Both teams struggled to get any offense going in the first half of the match as both back lines did a great job limiting opportunities. HSU scored first with a goal in the 40th minute of the match. With just a few seconds left before the half ended, the Tigers made a push which led to Michael Meese (Williamsburg, Va. / Jamestown) scoring an equalizing goal assisted by Brady Johnston (Northampton, England / Cinco Ranch).
Trinity and Hardin-Simmons continued their physical game throughout the remainder of the night with both teams having limited success creating good shots. In the 60th minute, Somerville was subbed in and immediately provided the spark that Trinity needed. Meese went on an incredible run and passed the ball to Somerville who netted a ball with his right foot in his very first touch off the bench. The Tigers took a 2-1 lead on the game-winning goal from the senior. The Trinity back line stepped up to hold the attacking Cowboys off for the rest of the match.
The defense for Trinity allowed just three shots on goal and Juan Carlos Vidales (Laredo, TX / IMG Academy) recorded two saves. On the other hand, the Tigers took 10 shots on goal with two of those shots reaching the back of the net. HSU only took three corner kicks while Trinity took eight throughout the match. With tonight's win over HSU, the Tigers improve to 3-0-0 on the year.
Coach Speak
"Another annual battle with Hardin Simmons who tested us in many different ways," said head coach Paul McGinlay. "However, it was a focused team effort that got us out of trouble sprinkled with some individual moments of excellence. Only one person was happier than me to see Michael Somerville getting the game winner. I would also like to single out JC Rule who turned in a massive defensive effort. As always, it is about the performance of all eleven on the field, and thankfully that went well too".
