SAN ANTONIO - The nationally-ranked Trinity University swimming & diving teams swept Saturday's dual meet with Southwestern University by scores of 174-79 for the No. 17 women and 172-83 for the No. 21 men.
The Tigers honored six seniors—
Emily Bartylla, Gabi Fulk, Karin Petersen, Nolan Anthony, Matteo Lanzara and Grayden Nelson—Saturday afternoon as the matchup with the Pirates was the final home event of the 2022-23 season.
First-year
Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird) made her first appearance in the 1,000 free and immediately put herself third on the program's all-time top-ten list, winning the event in 10:34.09 ahead of a pair of Pirate entries. Burns went on to claim victory in both the 200 breaststroke (2:24.83) and 200 individual medley (2:08.21).
Junior
Kendal Southwell (Rio Rancho, N.M. / Calvert) put on a breaststroke clinic in Saturday's action, winning both the 100 (57.62 seconds) and 200 events in 57.62 and 2:05.25, respectively, on top of taking on the second leg of Trinity's victorious 200 medley relay unit to open the meet.
The Tigers set two new all-time top-ten times for the men's program as well Saturday through rookies
William Walker (Houston, Texas / Westside) and
John Key (El Paso, Texas / Franklin). Walker was the first individual winner of the day as he landed ninth in program history with a 10:07.67 in his 1,000-yard freestyle debut. Key edged out Southwestern's Andrew Renninger—who became the lone winner for the Pirate men—for the 200 backstroke title in 1:55.50 which sits 10
th in the Trinity record book.
No. 17/21 Trinity Swimming & Diving will pay a visit to NCAA I University of the Incarnate Word next weekend before the 2023 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships begin in Garland, Texas February 8.
