GREENSBORO, N.C. – Trinity's men's and women's swimming & diving teams concluded the NCAA III Championships by finishing in the top 25 nationally.
The 16th-ranked Tiger women's team finished 19th overall with 42 total points, while the 20th-ranked men's team finished 23rd after scoring a total of 25 points. Two individuals (one woman and one man) earned All-America honors, while four relay teams also earned the distinction. All told, the men had five swimmers earn 2023 All-American status for their performances, while the women finished with four All-American performances.
First-year
Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird) was Trinity's top swimmer at the meet, collecting First Team All-American awards in three different individual events, while also swimming as part of the 800 free relay team that earned Second Team All-American accolades.
Burns was 2nd in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:18.50 to mark her best finish, while also finishing seventh in the 200 IM event with a time of 2:02.16 on day one. She was eighth in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday to pick up another award, finishing the race in 2:17.03.
Joining Burns on the 800 free relay team were first-years
Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talented & Gifted) and
Erica Peterson (Lantana, Texas / Guyer), along with junior
Emma Hagan (Overland Park, Kan. / Olathe East). The four Tigers completed the race in 7:37.02 to garner Second Team All-American status.
Junior
Michael Kohl (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) was the most decorated men's swimmer, earning Second Team All-America honors in the 100 butterfly with his time of 48.47 seconds that was good for 16th. He was also a part of the three men's relays that also earned Second Team All-America honors. Kohl also had a time of 20.29 seconds in the prelims of the 50 free that left him just 0.02 seconds short of qualifying for the finals in 17th place.
All five Tiger swimmers at the meet had a hand in the 200 medley relay All-America honors as Kohl teamed up with juniors
Nathaniel Early (Austin, Texas / Westwood) and
Kendal Southwell (Rio Rancho, N.M. / Calvert Online Academy), along with sophomore
Caleb Manifold (Helotes, Texas / Homeschool) to qualify in the prelims, then senior
Matteo Lanzara (Moraga, Calif. / Campolindo) replaced Early in the finals race that finished 12th in a time of 1:29.42.
The 200 free relay team of Kohl, Manifold, Early, and Lanzara was just 0.09 seconds from reaching the consolation final. Lanzara, Southwell, Kohl, and Early were 14th in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:19.52, while the 400 free relay team of Lanzara, Manifold, Early, and Kohl were 13th with a time of 3:00.60.
