Softball Splits SCAC Doubleheader at Schreiner

Trinity returned from dropping Friday’s opener to collect a 14-9 eight-inning affair after trailing 9-3 in the third; Dabboussi’s bases-clearing double in the eighth powered the five-run extra frame

KERRVILLE, Texas – Trinity University Softball came away from Schreiner University's Mountaineer Field with a six-run comeback victory as the day's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader split finished with an eight-inning, 14-9 victory.

The Tigers (3-18; 1-4 SCAC) collected breakout performances in the night's second game from senior Dawson Dabboussi (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) with four RBI—three of which came on a double in Friday's final inning—and first-year Hayden Del Toro (Cypress, Texas / Cy Woods) with another three RBI in the second contest.

For the day, first-year Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) went two-for-three from the plate with two walks to score three times and drive in another, all while logging 7.2 innings of work in the circle and collecting the decision in Friday night's finale.

Trinity Softball returns to Mountaineer Field Saturday for the SCAC series finale with Schreiner, slated for a Noon first pitch. The Tigers will stay in Kerrville for the afternoon with a junior varsity contest directly after.

Game One: Schreiner 11, Trinity 5
All but one of the 16 runs scored in the early contest was tallied in the first three innings, leading to three combined pitching changes through the first nine outs. Sophomore Alexa Saucedo (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen) opened Trinity's line scoring on a first-inning wild pitch.

Schreiner answered with a five-run bottom of the inning, though Trinity added two more tallies in the second as Arce collected her RBI on a bases-loaded walk, followed by a RBI fielder's choice for Saucedo, scoring juniors Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) and Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Valley Charter), respectively.

The Mountaineers inched further ahead with three-run second and third frames. The Tigers rounded out the first game's scoring with an Abigail Miller (Winnetka, Calif. / El Camino Real) RBI base hit with the bases loaded again in the third along with another errant play to score Saucedo a second time.

Game Two: Trinity 14, Schreiner 9
All told, the Tigers finished the day on an 11-0 run that answered an early 9-3 deficit through three frames. After trying three different arms, Trinity brought Arce back out in the fifth as the Tigers had worked back to just a three-run margin, 9-6.

Dabboussi opened the second game with a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Jessie Lloyd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills), then a pair of bases-loaded free passes for Lloyd and first-year Peyton Bowser (Arvada, Colo. / West) brought out an early 3-0 lead, only to see the Mountaineers throw up eight runs in the bottom of the second.

The comeback began in the fifth as Arce put a ball in play to reach on an error at short before Del Toro capitalized on the prolonged inning to score Arce and Williams on a base hit for the 9-6 margin that Arce entered the circle with in the bottom half.

The rally continued in the sixth as Delaluna plated Lloyd with a base hit. The Tigers later loaded the bases for first-year Carsyn Lee (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) to pick up a RBI walk, ending the inning at a 9-8 deficit.

Another error at shortstop, this time forced by a Bowser batted ball, scored Saucedo for her third run of the day and knotted things up in the top of the seventh. To that point, Arce had collected four outs—three via strikeout—to just one hit. The Tiger rookie continued her shutdown relief appearance with three straight routine plays in the seventh to force the extra.

Del Toro notched her third RBI to open the eighth, driving home Arce on a base hit. After a Lloyd walk loaded the bases for Trinity again, Dabboussi came through with a bases-clearing double, then later scored on a wild pitch for the eventual 14-9 final, leaving Arce to take her first collegiate victory from the circle in the bottom half.
