KERRVILLE, Texas – The Trinity softball team clinched its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference road series with a 10-9 win over Schreiner University on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers improved to 4-18 on the year after sealing the last two wins in the series via comeback victories, while also upping its conference record to 2-4. Schreiner slipped to 7-14 this season and 1-5 in SCAC play.
Jessie Lloyd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) smashed a single to right field with the bases loaded and two outs, which combined with an error, put the Tigers in front 10-8. Trinity then escaped with the win by stranding the tying run at third in the bottom of the inning.
Lloyd went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored to pace the Tiger offensive attack.
Dawson Dabboussi (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) also had two hits and collected two RBI, while
Hayden Del Toro (Cypress, Texas / Cy Woods) finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
Christina Garcia (San Ramon, Calif. / Dougherty Valley) was the fourth Tiger player to enjoy a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while
Alexa Saucedo (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen) scored a pair of runs as well.
Trinity returns to action on Tuesday, beginning a six-game home stand by hosting Wellesley College (Mass.) in a doubleheader. The Tigers will also welcome DePauw University (Ind.) for a single game on Thursday, then bring in Centenary College (La.) for a three-game SCAC weekend series.
The Rundown
Trinity loaded the bases with one out in the top of the first inning, leading to two runs that put the visitors in front early.
Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) drew a walk with the bases loaded to score the first run, while
Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Valley Charter) reached on a fielder's choice for the second run. The lead didn't last long, though, as Schreiner edged in front with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take its first lead.
The second inning was more of the same as both teams added to their totals once again. Lloyd and Dabboussi drove in runs in the inning, then Lloyd later scored on a wild pitch to give Trinity a 5-3 lead. Schreiner matched the output by the Tigers to reclaim the lead, scoring three runs on three hits to make it a 6-5 game after just two innings.
Schreiner loaded the bases with just one out in the third in a bid to add to the lead, but Tiger reliever
Brooke Porter (Carmel, Ind. / Heritage Christian) escaped the inning without any damage to keep it a one-run game.
Trinity strung together three hits and a sacrifice fly to add two more runs in the fourth, taking a 7-6 lead. Dabboussi drove in her second run of the game with a sac fly to right field, scoring both Del Toro and Saucedo – both of whom singled to start the inning. The theme of the game continued, though, as Schreiner once again answered Trinity scores with runs of its own. The Mountaineers got a single and a walk to start the frame, then later added a two-RBI hit to pull back in front 8-7.
The Tigers left the bases loaded in the fifth and Schreiner continued to lead until the final inning.
Carsyn Lee (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) reached on an error with one out and represented the tying run. After a single put runners at the corners, Del Toro hit a ground ball to second that could've tied things up, but Schreiner got the lead runner at home to remain in the lead.
Lanie Smith (Foxfield, Colo. / Regis Jesuit) kept the inning going with a pinch-hit single that loaded the bases for Lloyd's final-inning heroics.
Back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the seventh put the tying run on base with just one out, then Schreiner notched a sac fly to make it a 10-9 game with a runner at third.
Bella Gutierrez (Devine, Texas / Devine) induced a pop fly to finish off the game and earn the win.
