SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Wellesley College on Tuesday evening, winning 8-0 in five innings ahead of a narrow 8-7 loss in game two.
The Tigers now stand 5-19 this season after the split, while Wellesley picked up its first victory of the season to improve to 1-6-1. Trinity finished the opener with a five-inning run-rule, winning 8-0. Trinity was also on the verge of sweeping the night with a 5-3 lead in the seventh, but Wellesley scored five runs to take an 8-5 lead. Back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the inning made it an 8-7 game with just one out remaining, but Wellesley stranded the winning run on base to steal the win.
Bella Gutierrez (Devine, Texas / Devine) tossed a one-hit shutout to improve to 3-3 in the circle this season, recording two strikeouts in the complete-game effort.
Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) took the loss in relief in game two, falling to 1-6 on the season.
Emery Boettcher (Fredericksburg, Texas / Fredericksburg) gave up three runs over five innings to start the game, though none of the runs against her were earned. She also led the Tigers with five strikeouts in the game.
Dawson Dabboussi (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) powered the offense in game one, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Alexa Saucedo (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen) went 2-for-3 with a triple, driving in one run in the opener, and scoring once in each game.
Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Valley Charter) went 3-for-5 on the day, notching a double in both games and driving in three runs total.
Hayden Del Toro (Cypress, Texas / Cy Woods) and
Abigail Miller (Winnetka, Calif. / El Camino Real) both had two hits in the second game as well.
Trinity will be back in action on Thursday against DePauw University (Ind.), following a JV game at 5:00 p.m. with the varsity game at 7:00 p.m.
The Rundown, Game 1
Trinity erased a leadoff triple with a double play in the top of the first, which would prove to be the final hit of the game allowed by Gutierrez. The Tigers then used a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning to take the early lead. Dabboussi and
Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) hit back-to-back doubles after Wellesley got the first two hitters out, taking a 1-0 lead.
Carsyn Lee (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) followed with a run-scoring hit of her own to make it 2-0.
Jessie Lloyd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) drove in Saucedo with a sac fly to put the Tigers in front 3-0 after two innings, and the Tiger offense was just getting started. Dabboussi led off the third with her second double of the day, then Williams drove her in to make it 4-0 at the time. Arce tripled for the third extra-base hit of the inning to send in another run, then
Angela Baltzell (Antioch, Calif. / Freedom) send home the final run of the inning with a single to right.
Trinity picked up another run in the fourth as Williams drew a walk with the bases loaded, then another run was erased after a substitution mix-up and the game remained 7-0 heading into the fifth. In the bottom of the inning, Baltzell drew a four-pitch walk to start things off, then Saucedo laced a triple down the right field line to close out the win.
The Rundown, Game 2
Trinity took the early lead once again with a run in the bottom of the first of game two as Delaluna drove in Del Toro for the first run of the game. Del Toro then knocked in two more runs in the second as the Tigers took advantage of a Wellesley error to make it a 3-0 game.
Wellesley got its first run of the day in the third, but left the bases loaded and still trailed 3-1. The bottom of the inning was the first of the day that Trinity failed to score, but the offense was back on track with two more runs in the fourth. Del Toro picked up her third RBI of the day, but the Tigers missed out on an even bigger inning as Wellesley got a double play to keep it a 5-1 game.
The Blue cut the lead in half with two runs in the fifth inning, scoring on an error and a passed ball. Wellesley then drew four walks to go with three hits and a Trinity error to take its first lead of the day on a five-run seventh inning.
Trinity got the two-out hits from Williams and Miller to put the tying run on base, then a walk put the winning run on first. The comeback win fell just short, though, as Wellesley induced a game-ending ground ball to split the doubleheader.
