Men's Tennis Sets up All-Trinity Finals in ITA Regional Championships

ABILENE, TX - For the second straight year, the ITA Southwest Regional Championships will end with all-Trinity finals in both singles and doubles. The Trinity University men's tennis team secured spots in both championship matches on day three of the 2026 tournament, setting up rematches of last year's finals.

The singles championship begins Sunday at 9:00 a.m., followed by the doubles final at 12:00 p.m. With Tigers on both sides of each final, Trinity is guaranteed to sweep the regional titles again.

Defending champion Kishan Kersten (Plano, Texas / West) opened the day by blanking Smith of Hardin-Simmons University in the first set. He held on for a 6-0, 6-4 win in the Quarterfinals. In the Semifinals, the top seed faced Scholz of Concordia University, who had eliminated two Tigers earlier in the tournament. Kersten won both sets in comfortable fashion, 6-4.

Second seed Jared Perry (Tucson, Ariz. / Catalina Foothills) reached the final by beating two teammates. He won a first-set tiebreaker 7-4 against Fabio Di Loreto (The Woodlands, Texas / The Woodlands) in the Quarterfinals and closed out a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win. Perry was even sharper in the Semifinals, beating Kartick Gusain (Cambridge, Canada / Ontario Virtual) 6-2, 6-2.

Sunday's final will be a familiar matchup. Last year, Perry entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and Kersten as the No. 2. Kersten dropped the opening set 6-4 in the championship match before rallying to win the next two sets 6-1 and 6-4. This time the seeds are reversed, with Kersten trying to defend his title and Perry looking to take the last step.

The doubles final is a rematch as well. Kersten and Perry, the top seeds, beat Gusain and Di Loreto 8-1 in the Semifinals. In the other Semifinal, defending champions Ethan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) and Roshin Kamath (League City, Texas / Clear Springs) won a tight 8-6 match over Smith and Harris of Hardin-Simmons. That pair had knocked out two Trinity teams on Friday. A year ago, Flores and Kamath upset Kersten and Perry 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) to win the title. Kersten and Perry will look to turn the tables on Sunday.

Trinity's newcomers also made their mark in their first competition for the Tigers. Gusain had the biggest breakout, winning four singles matches to reach the Semifinals. That run included a 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) Quarterfinal win over third seed Ryan Warren (Keller, Texas / Connections Academy), the 2024 regional champion. Di Loreto won three singles matches to reach the Quarterfinals, where he pushed Perry to a first-set tiebreaker. Together, Gusain and Di Loreto won three doubles matches before falling in the Semifinals. Brodie Keller (Sacramento, California / School for the Talented and Gifted) and TJ Shanahan (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma / Bishop McGuinness) each reached the singles Round of 16 and teamed up to make the doubles Quarterfinals.

Kersten and Perry meet for the singles championship on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. They then return at 12:00 p.m. as partners to face Flores and Kamath for the doubles title.
