No. 18 Tiger Women’s Golf Claims West Region Invite Title

Whitney, Texas – The No. 18 Trinity Women's Golf team claimed first place at the West Region Invitational, finishing at +57 overall at White Bluff Resort - Old Course in Whitney, Texas, nine shots clear of Mary Hardin-Baylor in second at +66. Hardin-Simmons placed third at +93, with Southwestern at +104. Southwestern (B) (+130) and Dallas (+184) were the final two teams. 

The Tigers posted a +26 in the final round on a course that improved slightly from round one, with the field averaging 85.79 compared to 87.24 on the opening day. Trinity's dominance was comprehensive, they led the field in Par 3, Par 4, and Par 5 scoring, in total birdies, and in total pars, making them the most complete team in the field from tee to green across both days.

The Rundown

Jessica Mason (Westminster, Colo. / Holy Family) delivered another excellent performance in the final round, recording a two-over-par 74 (+2) to finish second individually at +7. Mason was at her most dangerous on the par 5s, picking up birdies on the sixth and fifteenth holes, whilst adding a birdie on the par-4 second to shoot a 37 on both sides. She leads the entire field in total birdies with six across both rounds, and her par 5 scoring of -2 ranks second in the field, underlining her ability to convert on the scorable holes. 

Natalie Lewis (El Paso, Texas / Coronado) carded a superb three-over-par 75 (+3) in the final round to finish 3rd overall at +10. Lewis picked up birdies on the par-5 sixth and the par-3 ninth and went out in 37 before a back nine of 38. She leads the entire field in Par 3 scoring across both rounds, and her four birdies across the tournament rank tied fourth in the field, a testament to the precision she brought to her game throughout the week.

Mason Fikes (Dallas, Texas / Plano West) carded a nine-over-par 81 (+9) in the final round, finishing 5th overall at +13 whilst competing as an individual. Fikes produced a steady front nine of 38 before a tougher back nine, picking up an impressive birdie on the par-4 fourteenth which was played at 4.85 by the rest of the field. Her three birdies across the tournament rank tied seventh in the field, and her Par 3 scoring ranks tied eighth overall, a solid two-day showing that placed her among the best individual competitors in the field.

Naaz Mehta (Newton, Pa. / Council Rock North) carded a ten-over-par 82 (+10) in the final round to finish T21 overall at +29. Mehta played as an individual and shot a steady 40 on the front nine whilst having a tougher back nine. 

Bella Bullock (Harlingen, Texas / Harlingen) carded a ten-over-par 82 (+10) in the final round, finishing T23 overall at +31 and competing as an individual. Bullock picked up a birdie on the par-4 eleventh hole and produced a consistent back nine of 41, matching her front nine, showing a solid performance throughout.

Sabrina Nader (Houston, Texas / The Kinkaid School) carded an eleven-over-par 83 (+11) in the final round to finish T10 overall at +22. Nader battled throughout a difficult day and demonstrated her course management not producing a single double bogey on the day. Her eighteen pars across the tournament ranks tied sixth in the field, a mark of the resilience she showed on an unforgiving course.

Lauren Huddleston (Anthem, Ariz. / Boulder Creek) carded a fourteen-over-par 86 (+14) in the final round to finish T10 overall at +22. Huddleston picked up birdies on the par-4 fourth and par-3 ninth holes on a challenging day, and her four birdies across the tournament rank tied fourth in the field.

By the Numbers

Trinity won the West Region Invitational leading the field in every major statistical category,  first in Par 3, Par 4, and Par 5 scoring, first in total birdies with 14, and first in total pars with 82. The Tigers also recorded the fewest doubles in the field with 15, a mark of the discipline and composure they showed across both rounds on a course that proved relentless for the rest of the field.

Up Next

The Tigers are back in action on April 24 in Dickson, Tennessee where they compete over 3 days in an attempt to win the conference championship. Coming off two straight tournament wins the Tigers looked primed to build on their momentum and offer stiff competition to the rest of the SAA.
