Sewanee, Tennessee - The Trinity Tigers men won
their third straight SCAC Track and Field Championship Saturday at
the University of the South.
Trinity, led by first-year head coach David Svoboda, captured
its seventh overall title. The Tigers scored 198 points,
outdistancing second-place Centre, with 172 points. Rhodes was
third with 134 points. The Tiger women finished third for the
second consecutive year. Trinity amassed 111 points, behind Rhodes
(217) and DePauw (195).
Senior All-American Todd Wildman was selected as the SCAC Male
Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Wildman, the NCAA indoor
champion in the pentathlon, set SCAC records in two individual
events: the 110-meter hurdles (14.80 seconds) and the 400-meter
hurdles (52.36 seconds). Wildman is ranked No. 1 in the nation in
the 400 hurdles. He also won the long jump (22 feet, 10.00 inches),
and was runner-up in the high jump (6 feet, 8.00 inches). Wildman
was part of the SCAC champion 4x100-meter relay team (42.10
seconds), which also consisted of junior Brennen Peters, first-year
Spencer Hayes and junior Tyson Cannon. Earlier this year, Wildman
had an NCAA Division III automatic qualifying mark of 6 feet, 11
inches in the high jump.
Chris Baer, also a senior All-American, set a SCAC mark in the
javelin, with a throw of 198 feet, 8 inches. Sophomore Zach Brush
is a new SCAC record-holder in the 800 meters, clocking in at
1:54.65. Junior Chass Armstrong established a SCAC record in the
1,500 meters, at 3:55.46. Armstrong finished second in the 800
meters (1:57.53).
The Tiger women also had a couple of familiar record-setters.
Senior All-American Emily Loeffler shattered the SCAC
3,000-meter steeplechase, with a time of 10:44.91. Loeffler also
won the 5,000 meters (17:47.53). Senior Elizabeth Eder set the
record in the 10,000 meters, or 10k, at 37:04.23.
Junior Donald Wesson captured the men's shot put (46 feet, 10.00
inches). Wesson placed third in the discus throw (138 feet, 2
inches) and picked up All-SCAC recognition. First-year Justin
Campbell won the discus throw (163 feet, 1 inch).
First-year Elizabeth Tweedy won the women's triple jump
(36 feet, 9.75 inches).
A number of other Tiger student-athletes earned All-SCAC honors,
by finishing in the top three of their events:
Men - Jonathan Osei-Kuffour, first year, triple jump (44 feet,
2.50 inches; third place); Gordon Abner, senior, long jump (22
feet, 5.75 inches; second place); Casey Pikla, senior, pole vault
(13 feet, 11.25 inches; second place); Peters, 110-meter hurdles
(15.73 seconds, third place) and 100-meter dash (11.23 seconds,
third place); and Cannon, 100-meter dash (11.16 seconds, second
place).
Women - Kathryn Coster, sophomore, shot put (36 feet, 3.50
inches; third place) and javelin throw (107 feet, 7 inches; third
place); Corey Callahan, first year, long jump (17 feet, 5.25
inches; third place); Hannah Linn, first year, pole vault (10 feet,
0 inches; second place); and D'Ann Arthur, senior, 5,000 meters
(18:13.45; second place). The 4x100-meter relay team placed third,
with a time of 51.88 seconds. Team members were Linn, Callahan,
junior Nicole Fisk and first year Jasmine Johnson.
