Baer Joins Teammates to Make it Six Tigers at NCAA Meet

San Antonio - Trinity University Tiger senior Chris Baer of Shiner, Texas (Shiner), has qualified for the men's javelin throw at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships Thursday through Saturday at Marietta, Ohio.

Baer joins five teammates who will compete at Marietta College. His  throw of 198 feet, 10 inches (60.60 meters) ranks 17th in the NCAA competition. Baer, also a standout running back on the Tiger football team, registered a throw of 205 feet, 2 inches (62.53 meters) at the 2008 NCAA meet, held at Oshkosh, Wis. He became one of Trinity's first Division III men's track and field All-Americans, along with sophomore Zach Brush (800 meters).

Seniors Todd Wildman, Emily Loeffler, D'Ann Arthur, Elizabeth Eder and first-year Justin Campbell previously qualified for this year's NCAA competition. The Tiger men and women are led by first-year head coach David Svoboda.

Wildman, of Dallas (Jesuit), earned slots in four men's events: 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, long jump and high jump. He is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 400-meter hurdles (52.36 seconds), No. 2 in the 110-meter hurdles (14.16 seconds), 13th in the long jump (23 feet, 4 inches; 7.11 meters) and No. 2 in the high jump (6 feet, 11 inches; 2.11 meters). Wildman won the NCAA Indoor pentathlon championship  - and was named an All-American - last March. He also was selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year. In the 2008 NCAA Championships, Wildman placed 13th in the high jump and 14th in the 110-meter hurdles, just missing the finals.

Campbell, of Victoria, Texas (Memorial), is ranked 10th nationally in the discus throw (165 feet, 4 inches; 50.40 meters). He is also an offensive lineman on the Tigers football team.

Loeffler, of San Antonio (O'Connor), is the top-ranked runner in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:33.16). She is a three-time All-American in outdoor and indoor track, and cross country. Loeffler placed fifth in the NCAA Indoor 5,000 meters, and was third in the 2008 Outdoor steeplechase. She was 17th in last fall's NCAA Cross Country Championships. The Tiger women's cross country team, led by head coach Jenny Breuer, finished No. 6 in the nation.

Arthur, of Bedford, Texas (Colleyville Covenant Christian Academy); and Eder, of Fort Worth, Texas (Nolan Catholic); both qualified for the NCAA women's 10,000 meters. Arthur is ranked eighth nationally (35:58.60) and Eder stands at No. 16 (36:32.86). The two Trinity runners also contributed to the success of the Tigers cross country team.
