San Antonio - Trinity University Tiger senior
Chris Baer of Shiner, Texas (Shiner), has qualified for the men's
javelin throw at the NCAA Division III Track and Field
Championships Thursday through Saturday at Marietta, Ohio.
Baer joins five teammates who will compete at Marietta College.
His throw of 198 feet, 10 inches (60.60 meters) ranks
17th in the NCAA competition. Baer, also a standout
running back on the Tiger football team, registered a throw of 205
feet, 2 inches (62.53 meters) at the 2008 NCAA meet, held at
Oshkosh, Wis. He became one of Trinity's first Division III men's
track and field All-Americans, along with sophomore Zach Brush (800
meters).
Seniors Todd Wildman, Emily Loeffler, D'Ann Arthur, Elizabeth
Eder and first-year Justin Campbell previously qualified for this
year's NCAA competition. The Tiger men and women are led by
first-year head coach David Svoboda.
Wildman, of Dallas (Jesuit), earned slots in four men's events:
110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, long jump and high jump. He
is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 400-meter hurdles (52.36
seconds), No. 2 in the 110-meter hurdles (14.16 seconds),
13th in the long jump (23 feet, 4 inches; 7.11 meters)
and No. 2 in the high jump (6 feet, 11 inches; 2.11 meters).
Wildman won the NCAA Indoor pentathlon championship - and was
named an All-American - last March. He also was selected as the
Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Male Track and Field
Athlete of the Year. In the 2008 NCAA Championships, Wildman placed
13th in the high jump and 14th in the
110-meter hurdles, just missing the finals.
Campbell, of Victoria, Texas (Memorial), is ranked
10th nationally in the discus throw (165 feet, 4 inches;
50.40 meters). He is also an offensive lineman on the Tigers
football team.
Loeffler, of San Antonio (O'Connor), is the top-ranked runner in
the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:33.16). She is a
three-time All-American in outdoor and indoor track, and cross
country. Loeffler placed fifth in the NCAA Indoor 5,000 meters, and
was third in the 2008 Outdoor steeplechase. She was 17th
in last fall's NCAA Cross Country Championships. The Tiger women's
cross country team, led by head coach Jenny Breuer, finished No. 6
in the nation.
Arthur, of Bedford, Texas (Colleyville Covenant Christian
Academy); and Eder, of Fort Worth, Texas (Nolan Catholic); both
qualified for the NCAA women's 10,000 meters. Arthur is ranked
eighth nationally (35:58.60) and Eder stands at No. 16
(36:32.86). The two Trinity runners also contributed to the success
of the Tigers cross country team.
