Trinity Wins Five Events at Chicago Penultimate Meet

Chicago, Illinois - At the historic Haydon Track - where Jesse Owens competed in the 1930s - the Trinity Tigers won five men's events Saturday at the University of Chicago Penultimate meet.

Senior Casey Pikla captured the decathlon, with 5,140 points. Individually, Pikla won the 100 meters (11.99 seconds), long jump (20 feet, 1.50 inches; 6.13 meters), high jump (5 feet, 6.50 inches; 1.69 meters), pole vault (13 feet, .25 inches; 3.97 meters) and the javelin throw (168 feet, 8 inches; 51.41 meters).

Chris Baer, also a senior won the javelin event, with a throw of 178 feet, 11 inches (54.54 meters). Baer previously earned an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying mark.

Senior Brennen Peters took the 200 meters, clocking in at 22.08 seconds.

Sophomore Zach Brush won the 800 meters, with a time of 1:53.75. Brush had an earlier NCAA provisional qualifying time.

The 4x400-meter relay team emerged as the meet champion, at 3:22.58. First year Matt Sokolic started off the race, and passed the baton to senior Todd Wildman. Senior Phil Avocato and Brush had the final two legs.

Junior Chass Armstrong finished second in the 1,500 meters and earned a provisional qualifying time (3:54.45).

First-year Justin Campbell was runner-up in the discus, at 165 feet, 4 inches (50.40 meters). Campbell improved his previous provisional performance of 163 feet, 1 inch.

Corey Callahan, a first-year athlete, placed second in the women's long jump, at 17 feet, 3.50 inches (5.27 meters).

A number of Tigers competed Friday at the Dr. Keeler Invitational at Naperville, Ill., including Callahan. She was seventh in the long jump, with a mark of 16 feet, 11.50 inches (5.31 meters).

Senior Emily Loeffler won the Dr. Keeler Invitational women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a best-in-the-nation time of 10 minutes, 33.16 seconds. Loeffler, who placed third in the 2008 NCAA meet, earned an automatic bid to this year's NCAA Division III Championships. The meet is slated for May 21-23 at Marietta, Ohio.

D'Ann Arthur, also a senior, picked up an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 5,000 meters, clocking in at 17:19.75 (14th in the nation), for a second-place finish. Senior Liz Eder placed second in the 10,000 meters, at 36:32.86. Eder, whose time is ranked 17th nationally, earned a provisional qualifying mark.

Wildman won two men's events on Friday, the 110-meter hurdles and long jump. Wildman, the national champion in the indoor pentathlon, ran the hurdles in 14.33 seconds. He previously had an automatic qualifying time of 14.16 seconds, No. 2 in the nation. In the long jump, Wildman recorded a mark 23 feet, 4 inches (7.11 meters), the 13th best jump in the nation, and a provisional qualifying distance. Wildman placed fifth in the high jump, at 6 feet, 4.75 inches (1.95 meters). He already has an NCAA automatic jump of 6 feet, 11 inches (2.11meters), second in the nation.

In addition, Wildman is the national leader in the 400-meter hurdles (52.36 seconds), which he won at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.

Peters finished sixth in the 200 meters (21.87 seconds) and Sokolic was 18th in the 400 meters (51.69 seconds).

The NCAA Championships are slated for May 21-23 at Marietta, Ohio.
