Mobile, Ala. - The outstanding run of the
Trinity Tigers men's doubles team of Bobby Cocanougher of
Southlake, Texas (Carroll); and Cory Kowal of Austin, Texas
(Anderson); came to an end Saturday afternoon at the USTA/ITA
National Small College Championships.
The NCAA Division II champion team of Rafael Array and Mikk Irdoja
of Armstrong Atlantic (Ga.) beat Division III champs
Cocanougher and Kowal 6-3, 6-3 in the Super Bowl semifinals at
Copeland Cox Tennis Center.
On Friday, the Tiger duo had captured the Division III title
with a straight-sets victory over Emory's Chris Goodwin and Will
Humphreys. The winners of Divisions II and III, along with the NAIA
and JUCO (junior college) champions, played for the overall
championship in the Super Bowl round.
The two Tiger players, competing in their third National Small
College event, won the ITA Southwest Region Championship Oct. 3 at
Trinity. Last May, the Trinity duo advanced to the NCAA Division
III Doubles Championship match.
Cocanougher and Kowal became the third Trinity doubles team to
win the ITA Division III national crown. Sean Fifield and Stefan
Parker took the title in 2003, and Jamie Broach and Michael Slutzky
won the championship in 1997.
In the Division III singles consolation, Vassar's Andrew Guzick
beat Cocanougher 7-5, 0-6, 6-3 in the seventh-place match.
