Box Score San Antonio -- Five members of the Trinity University Tigers men's soccer team have been elected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III All-West Region Team.
Junior midfielder Zach Garcia (Dallas/Lake Highlands), sophomore defender Denny Mask (Tulsa, Okla./Holland Hall), sophomore midfielder Nima Naderi (Carrollton, Texas/Creekview), and first-year forward Yuri Ribeiro (Salvador, Brazil/Seaton Catholic; Chandler, Ariz.) made the All-West Region First Team.
Senior defender Chris Schardon (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) was selected for the All-West Region Second Team.
Ribeiro was Trinity's scoring firepower, with 15 goals (five game-winners) and five assists. Last month, Ribeiro was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year. Trinity produced 86 goals (3.74 per game) during the campaign, and had 256 shots on goal (11.13 per game).
Garcia was selected as an NSCAA All-American in 2009. He is the 2010 SCAC Offensive Player of the Year, scoring 12 goals (two game-winners), and dishing out five assists.
Mask, who transferred from North Carolina-Greensboro, scored five goals for the Tigers, and was a key member of the defense which yielded only 18 goals (.78 per game). Naderi had two goals (one game-winner) and seven assists.
Schardon and the taut Tiger defense allowed only 62 shots on goal (2.70 per game) by opponents.
The Tigers, led by 20th-year Head Coach Paul McGinlay, completed the 2010 season with a 19-3-1 record, and an 11-0-0 SCAC mark.
Trinity won its 14th SCAC Championship, and Coach McGinlay was elected SCAC Coach of the Year for the 12th time.
The Tigers competed in their 14th NCAA Tournament, and ninth in a row. Trinity opened the postseason with a 3-1 victory over Pacific (Ore.) at the Trinity Soccer Field. The Tigers advanced to the third round, 4-2 on penalty kicks over Texas-Tyler, following a 0-0 tie after two overtimes in a home game. Eventual finalist Lynchburg (Va.) upset the top-ranked Tigers 2-0 in an NCAA third-round game at Delaware, Ohio.
