San Antonio - The Tyler Junior College Apaches,
ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA, edged the Trinity Tigers men 5-4 Sunday
in a dual match at Delavan Tennis Stadium.
Trinity, ranked No. 14 in the NCAA Division III, now stands at
1-3 for the season.
The Tigers captured No. 2 doubles, as first-year Erick
DelaFuente of El Paso, Texas (Coronado); and sophomore Max Frey of
Tulsa, Okla. (Holland Hall); beat the Apaches John Devose and Peter
Thomason 8-2.
Frey won No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over TJC's Mario
Jakovljevic. No. 4 singles went to Trinity as junior Cory Kowal of
Austin, Texas (Anderson), beat Devose 5-7, 6-3, (10-8), with a
tiebreak instead of a third set.
Tyler JC clinched the match at No. 5 singles, as Paulo Roessle
beat Trinity's Andrew Hoing 6-4, 6-3.
The Tigers also captured No. 6 singles, with sophomore Franklin
Davis of Dallas (Highland Park) beating Billy Bishop 6-2, 2-6,
(10-7).
The Tigers will host St. Edward's, ranked 19th in the
NCAA Division II, at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
