Louisville, Ky. - The defending conference
champion Trinity University Tigers women are the leaders after the
second day of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming
and Diving Championships.
Trinity, which has won each of the past six SCAC titles, lead
DePauw 320-262.5. The Tiger men, runners-up for the past four
years, are in second place (306), behind defending champion DePauw
(329).
The event is being held at the University of Louisville's Ralph
Wright Natatorium.
Sophomore Alex Miranda of Upper Arlington, Ohio (Upper
Arlington), repeated as the men's 500-yard freestyle champion.
Miranda swam the race in an NCAA Division III "B" cut time of
4:34.04. Andrew Battles, a sophomore from Colleyville, Texas
(Keller), earned All-SCAC honors with a third-place finish
(4:40.90). The top three finishers in each event gain All-SCAC
status.
Trinity's men's 400-yard medley relay team won the event
(3:27.17), setting a SCAC open record and picking up and NCAA "B"
cut time. The team consisted of first-year Sean Fronczak of
Sunnyvale, Calif. (St. Francis); first-year Audel Mehrinfar of
Houston (Strake Jesuit Prep); first-year Spencer Bard of Knoxville,
Tenn. (Bearden); and senior Graham Mullings of Magnolia, Texas
(Montgomery).
The men's 200-yard freestyle relay team placed second, clocking
in at 1:25.78. Team members were Bard; sophomore Zach Dielmann of
Austin, Texas (Westwood); senior Sean Benton of Houston (Klein
Collins); and sophomore Drew Cauthorn of Austin, Texas (Lake
Travis).
Mullings was third in the men's 50-yard freestyle (21.30
seconds), missing the NCAA "B" cut by 0.13 seconds.
Sophomore Matt Wey of Ridgewood, N.J. (Ridgewood), was a
fifth-place finisher in the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.50).
First-year swimmer Ana Price of Springfield, Mo. (Glendale), was
third in the women's 50-yard freestyle, with an NCAA "B" cut time
of 24.39 seconds.
The Tiger women's 200-yard freestyle relay team just missed a
"B" cut performance by 0.43 seconds, with a third-place finish
(1:38.55). Swimming the event were Price; first-year Rachel Berude
of Kingwood, Texas (Kingwood); first-year Lisa Tucci of Mission
Hills, Kan. (Notre Dame de Sion); and junior Leigh-Anne Ladymon of
Dallas (Ravenwood).
Tucci also placed third in the 200-yard individual medley
(2:11.46).
Junior Mary West of Phoenix (Xavier College Prep), clocked in at
5:17.75 for fifth place in the 500-yard freestyle.
The Tiger 400-yard medley relay team of Price; first-year Leslie
Butts of Gilbert, Ariz. (Highland High); junior Sara Griffis of
Houston (Kingwood); and junior Kristen Zinser of Cypress, Texas
(Cy-Fair); placed third with a time of 4:05.36.
Earlier in the day, Tiger junior Hayley Emerick of Portland,
Texas (Gregory-Portland), won the women's 3-meter diving
competition for the third straight year. Emerick, who has also won
the 1-meter board for the past two years, registered a score of
479.45 at the University of Louisville's Ralph Wright Natatorium.
Tiger divers placed 1-6, and seven of the top eight, in the
3-meter event. Senior Lindsay Martin of Longview, Texas (Pine
Tree), was runner-up with a score of 459.30. Sophomore Lynne
Bettinger of Albuquerque, N.M. (La Cueva), placed third (420.00);
first-year diver Ruth Hahn of Knoxville, Tenn. (Bearden), was
fourth (419.70); first-year Madison Kahler of Coral Springs, Fla.
(Westminster), was fifth (362.80); and senior Amy Oliver of Houston
(Lamar), came in at No. 6 (336.90). Sophomore Kristin Nordstrom of
The Woodlands, Texas (The Woodlands), battled her way to the No. 8
slot (277.55).
Emerick, Martin, Bettinger, Hahn, Kahler, and Nordstrom had
previously earned NCAA Division III consideration scores.
The women's 1-meter diving is scheduled for Saturday, and the
men's 3-meter on Friday. Sophomore Kevin Martin of Corpus Christi,
Texas (Ray), won the men's 1-meter board (448.35).
The SCAC swimming finals continue through Saturday.
Preliminaries start at 10:30 a.m., and the finals at 6:30 p.m.
