SAN ANTONIO - The Trinity University Men's Swimming and Diving Team remains in first place in the Tiger Invite with a team score of 751. The University of Texas Permian Basin is in second place with a score of 617. The Tigers broke one record today, won a relay race and combined for four individual wins in different events.
Two groups of Trinity swimmers occupied the first three spots in the 200 yard medley relay. Matteo Lanzara (Moraga, Calif. / Campolindo), Spencer Steward (Kearney, Mo. / Kearney), John Fontenot (Austin, Texas / St. Andrew's) and Nathaniel Early (Austin, Texas / Westwood) took first place with a time of 1:33.13. Daniel Sarman (Austin, Texas / Vandergrift), Wesley Wasserburger (Austin, Texas / James Bowie), Ben Adams (Lubbock, Texas / Monterey) and Shamzi Alkaff (Ft. Collins, Colo. / Fossil Ridge) finished in second place with a time of 1:35.29.
William Kitto IV (Prairieville, La. / Catholic High School) took third in the 400 yard IM with a time of 4:14.53. Caleb Manifold (Helotes, Texas / Homeschool), Fontenot and Wasserburger claimed the top three spots in the 100 yard butterfly. Manifold touched the wall in 49.83 while Fontenot and Wasserburger finished in 51.00 and 51.87.
Early beat his previous record in the 200 yard freestyle by taking first place with a time of 1:38.88. Michael Kohl (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) and Omar Shahatit (Austin, Texas / Westlake) took second and third in the 200 yard freestyle with times of 1:40.34 and 1:41.56.
Kendal Southwell (Rio Rancho, N.M. / Calvert Online Academy) raced to a 56.78 in the 100 yard breaststroke to claim first place. Steward took second in the same event by touching the wall in 58.80.
Lanzara, Kohl and Fontenot ended the night by taking the top three spots in the 100 yard backstroke. Lanzara raced to a 51.09, with Kohl and Fontenot touching the wall in 51.46 and 52.35.
