Box Score Greencastle, Indiana – The Trinity Men's distance
medley relay team finished second today at the Division III
National Championships.
This is the first time Trinity has ever fielded a distance
medley relay team at the national meet, as well as the first time
any male distance runner has garnered Indoor All-American honors in
Trinity history.
The team, consisting of Seniors Chass Armstrong, Bryant Wright,
and Brennan Peters, as well as Junior Zach Brush, finished well
ahead of their eighth place ranking going into the meet.
Armstrong, who led off the relay, sprinted to the lead with 400
meters of his 1,200 meter leg remaining. His 3:03 split put him
well ahead of his closest pursuers as he handed off the baton to
Brennan Peters.
Peters, who made his DMR debut in the race, blazed through his
400 meter leg in 49 seconds, easily maintaining his team's
lead.
Next up for Trinity was Junior Zach Brush, an outdoor
All-American in the 800 meters. Brush let the field catch up to him
slightly over the course of the first 600 of his 800 meters, only
to drop the pace and expand his lead in the last 200. Brush
finished his leg in 1:53 before handing off the baton for the last
time to Senior Bryant Wright, who took off flying around the curve.
Wright, running the final 1600 meters of the relay, hammered the
pace early, running close to 4 minute mile pace. In the end he
would fend off all but one of his competitors, finishing a
heartbreaking second to the team from Wisconsin Stevens Point, with
an overall time of 10:02.45 to Stevens Point's 10:02.38.
In his first event following his second national title in the
men's pentathlon, Senior Todd Wildman barely missed making
the 55m Hurdle finals running 7.66 in his heat. He will compete in
his final event, the high jump, tomorrow.
Junior Caitlin Masse will also run the 5,000m final tomorrow at
4:20 eastern, 3:20 central time tomorrow.
