San Antonio - The Laredo Community College
Palominos edged the Trinity University Tigers 5-4 Friday afternoon
in a men's tennis match at Delavan Tennis Stadium.
Trinity, ranked No. 13 in the NCAA Division III, now stands at
2-5. The Palominos are ranked No. 2 in the National Junior College
Athletic Association.
The Tigers started the match by winning two of three doubles.
Sophomore Max Frey and first-year player Erick DelaFuente won
No. 2 doubles, beating Antoine Raffaelli and Leury Arias 9-8 (2).
The Tiger team of sophomore Ben Carroll and junior Don Murray took
No. 3 doubles, with an 8-5 win over Guilherme Narducci and Mateus
Campos. LCC's Cledson Carvalho and Felipe Baptista won No. 1
doubles, edging juniors Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal 9-7.
The Palominos evened the match as Arias beat DelaFuente 6-1, 6-2
at No. 3 singles. LCC went up 4-2, starting at No. 1 singles, as
Carvalho beat Frey 6-1, 6-4. No. 5 singles went to the Palominos,
with Narducci a 6-3, 6-3 winner over junior Andrew Hoing.
The clincher for LCC came at No. 2 singles, as Rafaelli won a
three-setter from Cocanougher 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Trinity finished the match with two victories, at Nos. 4 and 6
singles. Kowal beat Luis Rovira 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, and
Murray was a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 winner over Campos at No. 6.
The Tigers begin their Division III schedule by hosting
Hardin-Simmons at 9 a.m. Saturday, and Schreiner at 2 p.m.
Trinity's women, ranked 19th, also take on
Hardin-Simmons and Schreiner.
