Box Score San Antonio, TX – The Tigers were back in
action this Saturday at E.M. Stevens Stadium, competing in the
2nd annual edition of the Trinity Alumni Classic. The
Tigers faced stiff competition in the form of both Division I
schools and international caliber unattached athletes. The meet was
highlighted by wins in the men's discus by Sophomore Justin
Campbell and the women's 5000 meter by Junior Caitlin Masse,
as well as a new school record in the women's long jump by
Sophomore Corey Callahan.
Callahan (Austin, TX) finished 5th in the long jump
competition, but it was good enough to grab the school record
previously held by multiple time SCAC athlete of the year Stephanie
Hankins. Callahan's day was far from over, as she would
return to compete in the 100 meter hurdles, as well as run a strong
leg on Trinity's 4th place 4x400 meter relay team.
Justin Campbell (Victoria, TX) continued what has already been a
strong season with yet another win in the Men's Discus.
His final mark of 47.85 meters outdistanced his nearest
competitor by nearly two and a half feet, and was good for another
NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Campbell, who attained
All-American status in the Discus at last year's
Championships, also placed 3rd in the men's shot
put with a throw of 13.09 meters – immediately behind Trinity
alum and school record holder Kels Farmer, whose throw of 13.65
meters was good for 2nd place.
Caitlin Masse (Katy, TX) notched a win in the women's 5000
meters in a time of 17:43.11. Her win was the only one of the day
for the Tiger women, and marks the second consecutive year a
Trinity athlete has won the 5000 meters at the Alumni Classic. The
5000 meter races were immediately followed with the 2nd
annual running of the always entertaining Alumni Mile. Although the
early lead was held by Trinity Assistant Coach Joe Macrini (Class
of 2008), in the end it was 3000m steeplechase school record holder
Jeremy Daum (Class of 2008) who took home the title, followed
closely by 4-time All-American (and fiancée) Emily
Loeffler (Class of 2009).
