San Antonio - The University of the Incarnate
Word Cardinals edged the Trinity Tigers men 5-4 Saturday in an
inter-divisional tennis match at Trinity's Delavan Tennis
Stadium.
UIW, ranked 28th in the NCAA Division II, improved to 2-0. Trinity,
ranked No. 10 in Division III, now stands at 0-3. The Tigers lost a
5-4 match to St. Edward's, ranked 15th in Division II, last
Thursday at Austin, Texas.
Saturday's dual match came down to No. 4 singles, with the score
tied at 4-4. The Cardinals Brandon Davis outlasted Tiger senior
Cory Kowal 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 to win the match-up.
Trinity started the match by winning two of three doubles.
Kowal and Cocanougher, last year's NCAA doubles finalists, beat
UIW's Leury Arias and Chris Lawson 8-1 in the No. 1 match. Erick
DelaFuente and Max Frey of Trinity took No. 2 doubles with an 8-1
victory over David Ballenger and Luke Trautmann. UIW's Carlos
Olvera and Aidan Deleon won No. 3 doubles, with a tight 9-8 nod
over Ben Carroll and Don Murray.
The Cardinals won four of six singles matches.
But, Frey led the Trinity charge by capturing No. 1 singles, with a
three-set 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Arias. The Tigers' other victory
was at No. 6 singles, with Julio Benavides defeating Trautmann 5-4,
retired (injury).
Lawson beat Cocanougher 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. DelaFuente took
Olvera, his UIW opponent, to three sets at No. 3 singles, before
losing 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Ballenger was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Trinity's Andrew Hoing at No.
5 singles.
Trinity will compete next Friday through Sunday, Feb. 20, at the
ITA National Indoors at Fredericksburg, Va. The University of Mary
Washington is the host school. The Tigers open with a match against
fifth-ranked California-Santa Cruz at 9 a.m. Eastern (8 a.m.
Central) on Friday.
